Description I miss being relevant.

I miss the days when you were as passionate about me,
As I am about you.

I’m just a fallback now.
A memory.
A safe place.

A stuffed animal you loved for years,
And still do.
But now my only place in your life is on this shelf.

You’ve outgrown me.

You pull me down when you need the comfort of a childhood friend,
But once you gain back your confidence,
I go back to collecting dust.

No longer am I an adventure.

Just memory and patterns.
All the same patterns across an aging quilt.

I dial your number now,
Knowing already with near complete certainty.
You don’t pick up.

You’ll text me in a day or two.
‘Sorry,’ you’ll say.
‘I’m really busy,’ you’ll tell me.

Rinse and Repeat.

Then one day, you’ll call me.
When your new adventure isn’t what you thought it would be.
When a new friend or lover hurts you.

‘I can’t believe I wasted so much time with him,’
You’ll say,
As you take me down off the shelf,
And dust me off.

I’ll bask in the love and attention,
As you vent to me,
And tell me how thankful you are to have me to talk to.
It will feel like our love did when it was new.

Then later I’ll wonder,
When the euphoria’s worn off,
What time you had to waste on him,
When you were too busy for your best friend?

Everyone is busy.
Always.
That is the nature of Life.
It’s what and whom you choose to busy yourself with.

And you don’t choose me anymore.

For no longer am I an adventure.

I know there’s no malice in it.
I know you still love me.
And I’ll always love you too.

But I miss being the one you were excited to spend time with.

I hope someday I’ll climb,
Off my shelf,
Take your hand,
Lead you on an adventure.

You’ll look into my eyes, with the passion you used to.

You’ll breathe me.
And I’ll breathe you.

Until then, I’ll wait here on my shelf.

Rinse and Repeat.

Because I guess I need the comfort of a childhood friend too.
