She had two eyes in Metroid 1, but Super Metroid is when she become a cyclops, and she's stayed that way ever since, even Metroid 1's remake, Zero Mission.Β
I'm not sure if it's a respirator, but judging from the original sprite, she's sort of just supposed to be a biomechanical nightmare of sorts ala Giger's Alien, and tubes and cords are a staple of that design aesthetic.Β

Thanks!
I think the collab is one artist per game. So I think the admin is choosing her favorite artist for each game. But regardless, looking forward to it too!

This is such aniconic scene and such a powerful image - you really have a lair for the quietly dramatic! I've always loved how you evoke such large drama or emotion in a picture in such subtlety!
The comic-esque lineshading's beautiful here.
And I love colouring, especially the ambient lighting on Samus from Mother's tank. And I really love how you used her original design for the Powersuit! Makes it feel far more "authentic" than her recently more feminized suit, or even the large-shouldered RoS Varia style. Really recalls the original scene!
One stylistic choice you've taken with Mother's eyes is something I wasn't expecting, but I love the more human and almost feminine look to them!
I am loves. <3

Thanks for the in-depth comment! I really do appreciate it!
The original powersuit just looks cooler to me, it has more of an industrial and less-streamlined look.
I love Mother Brain's original design, the current cyclops version looks more like a b-movie monster to me.

*bows* ~This is incredible! The color choice and texture is that of an almost dream-like state... I'm floating, but suddenly I'm pulled back into reality with the sudden 'electric' blue that seems to be lurking in MotherBrains tank.
-- I love your colors... I just love your colors!! (Yes, it deserved to be repeated)
I'm hoping you'll win because this is an remarkable piece and I'm lovin it.

I love how original this is!! Two eyes...wow. So very original and nostalgic of you.
And the perspective adds a lot to it, overall.

It's so seldom done...it's remarkable to see this design again. More than you know.

Good work It's Very Impressive, MB looks down samus and makes his look even more threatening
I like it.
But, just a question: MB has only one eye ... It is a mistake or a deliberate choice of draw him two?

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Samus-Cosplay [2011-07-17 18:24:02 +0000 UTC]
In the original Metroid for the NES, MB had two eyes.

She's been a cyclops ever since Super Metroid though.

In Super Metroid and the Metroid 1 Remake, Zero Mission. But in the original 1986 Metroid, she looked like this, much more interesting.

Ah. I guess thats the chozo one then. No doubt the space pirates rebuilt her and tried to make her look 'cooler' in their eyes. XD

Did the Chozo create the Mother Brain?
π: 0 β©: 2
Aldark In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2011-07-18 11:25:14 +0000 UTC]
Yes. They created her in order to maintain balance in Zebes ecosystem and keep everything going properly so they didn't need to worry about their world dying or anything. Motherbrain also created the Powersuit Samus currently wears.
[link] This might help explain. lol

Since she is basically intergrated into the planet itself, unlike how ridleys ship was actually a different structure entirely on the surface, its easy to see it didn't just arrive there when the pirates did. lol

oh...my goodness...
This has GOT to be the best NES Metroid piece I've seen done so far. I love how you took the fight into a 3D world, from Samus' view. Mother Brain looks so menacing. You pulled off the bubbles in her tank awesomely too. !
