I'd like to know how you achieve all of the subtle shading and highlights. This is amazing...I have issues with subtle shading and some fine details, it never turns out. Was the paper you used extremely white to begin with or kind of a creamy off white color?

This was drawn on ordinary printer paper, which is extremely white.
As for the subtle shading, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- the only things kept white on the paper should be highlights
- use cotton buds/q-tips for shading, and most importantly
- the moment you think you're finished ...realise you're not
Hopefully some if not all of that comes to good use.

Geez, right after I gawk over your Gary Oldman I come across this! My confidence is like this '.' now. Wow, the subtleties, the nuances of light, the reflective light on the bottom left side of his face. Done SO perfectly. I'm serious. This is PERFECT. The title is wonderful. The tight cropping; I've been toying around with the same idea; capturing quick moments and expressions in everyday life that people don't really take the time to notice. I love charcoal AND children! 100% favourite from me. I am completely awestruck *insert 20 more lines of praise*

The truth in this is confronting and disturbing, excellent portrayal! I won't get into the issues this brings to mind, but I feel so strongly on them, and so the impact of this is tremendous. I see it exemplified everyday in the isles of the grocery stores, in the malls, along the sidewalks, in the parking lots, the doctors offices... Awesome, meaningful work.

This may sound really silly... but the thing I love most about this deviation is... *drumroll* the eyelashes! They look so REAL! And I saw a kid pulling that face today! Haha... some argument with his mum about chocolate.

this piece is my favorite. It reminds me of my son, and your charcoal version of it gives the image a softer touch than the photo, which i like quite a bit better. very nice work. +watch
