Or that's what I was trying to say in French; my French to English brain works a little faster than my English to French brain, so it might not actually be what you'd say in Parisian French. And of course, English speakers tend to be literal in their translations.

Well, I didn't take Spanish, but since I took French, it's a little easier for me to understand some of the words.
morte = muerto (dead)
lait = leche (milk)
le = el ("the" for a masculine object)
la = la ("the" for a feminine object)
les = los ("the" for a group of objects)
la torture = la tortuga (turtle/tortoise)

There's probably a few more cognates between the two, but I just haven't found them yet. And there's certainly a couple between French and the English language. You have to be careful though as there a few "false friend" cognates.
