Description
Every night, things become incredibly awkward at the dinner table when the Beast asks Beauty to marry him. Every night she refuses and takes her leave of him. She wishes that he would stop asking; he wishes that he could.Did I say that I was over my Beauty and the Beast mania? Sorry, I must have meant to type not over it. Silly me.
I did this in Laurentien coloured pencils, which was an experience. Colour is, like, a million times harder than black and white. I could've done this in a third of the time using pencils. Still, I'll never learn if I don't keep trying! I messed up a lot of stuff, but it's still better than I expected, so I'm proud.
When I decided to colour this, I scanned in the pencil rough. It's up in Scraps if anyone wants to see it.

You do beautiful colored pencil work. It's one of my favorite media, and you exectue it incredibly well in this piece. What kind of paper/board did you do this on?

Thank you for your kind words. I just did this in my sketchbook (Canson, 65 lb.), which, while probably not the greatest quality paper, is at least acid-free.

Wow that is truly amazing. I love the reflection on the table of the vase and flowers. The detail in her dress and the colors is just beautiful.

Well done, nice concept.
A few things I've learned when using color pencils:
Start by choosing a paper with the color of midtones of the subjects you plan on drawing.
Also, avoid using black or white pencils if possible. This will force you to study the colors more carefully. As you will find, very rarely do you have absolutely white highlights or black shadows.
Keep it up!

Thanks for the tips! I'll be sure to try them out.
Though I don't have anything in the way of coloured paper, I'm sure I could find some somewhere.
However, if the colour of your paper is the colour of your midtones, what can you do to lighten it, short of using white?

If you look around, every shadow and highlight is filled with subtle color. If you really study your environment, you rarely find instances of pure white or black. Simply use the colors you see.
I used 43 pencils in this piece: [link]
But I didn't use white or black (might be hard to see in this small image)

If I could think of better words to say then most of the other people already said about this exquisite masterpiece, I'd certainly say them. Truth is, all the things I'd like to say, ie: Beautiful mixing of colors; lovely shading; amazing skills with the folds; etc.. Well, that's all been said. But I'd like you to know that you'll forever kick my ass, and I love this piece.

An adorable work: neatly chosen colour tones, perfect shading (what makes the vision of flexures on dress very realistic), generally very moody. More than well done. Now I am going to browse Your gallery.
Kind regards.

this is really nice, I like your color pencil technique, it's important to use many colors in all sections of your drawing which you've done beautifully

Well done! Yes, you're right, painting with colored pencils does take much longer than a graphite drawing. And you've definitely painted here; it shows. Kudos!

It does take so much longer, but I guess there's a lot more that you can do with colour than with black and white, and it makes it worth it. Thanks for the encouragement!

Thank you. Folds are really fun to do, and they're nearly cheating - they mean that I don't have to do smooth colouring over too wide an area.

This is so masterfully shaded I'm in total awe. I wish I was as good with colour as you are. I love the muted tone to all colours, the mood it gives to the pic - dark, opressive, gloomy. And the leaded-glass rose is beautiful.

If I seem good at colour, it's only because I'm lucky. I'm just guessing my way through these colour pictures.
I'm really glad to know that the mood came across. Thank you!

I think that developing your own style is inevitable, if you draw enough, but I hope that what I've got now keeps on changing. I don't think I want to be stuck with this for the rest of my life. Thanks for your kind words!
