This is a first take at the first part of the proposed animation.

I found the "beams" were too obscuring so I tried having them pulse through the scene. Not sure I like it… the sort of glitch between the pulses is caused by my turning on motion blur - and you're seeing the sort of "reload" of the beams - I'm simply moving them up and down - you can see them sticking up out of the top of the apparatus in the right mirror - I'll fix that if I decide to keep this.

I think more likely I'll use some variation of the "curtain" effect (which unfortunately also includes the beams - otherwise i'd consider rotating it) and render with and without, then write some Python to merge them with some sort of a transparency - possibly pulsing.

Certainly interested in feedback / suggestions.
