Çz knew the Transmogrifier™ technology his race had "acquired" from a now extinct species was never able to correctly simulate the thin strands that some humanoid species still retained from their ancient ancestors.  Current science maintained that "hair" was solid evidence for the humans' likely genetic inferiority.

The simulated view combined from the two ring drones showed the problem in detail.  The second attempt was closer, but clearly the hair was not right.  Still, this was the best they could do if Az was to infiltrate the humans and secure a base of operations.

OK - way too many months of struggling with hair and Poser crashes every couple of hundred frames - but here it is.  How many things went wrong?  Probably too many to catalog, but for a start:

  • I neglected to properly collide the hair along the back and sides with the skull prop, because it wasn't ready when I did the first simulations and I thought it wouldn't be an issue so why bother with another day or so of hair simulation since I had it in the bag.  Right.  So towards the end the side hair flows through the head and face and ruins whatever illusion I may have got away with up to that point.
  •
  • Poser seems to have a (new?) problem with secondary reflections - some multiply reflected images dance back and forth for no obvious reason
  •
  • Some props, like the legs of the saucer, are flashing / changing textures in a seemingly random way.
  •
  • This was supposed to be a 1-2 week learning session for playing with and learning about hair - took a lot longer than that - but I did learn a lot.
  •
  • And yeah, the latest version of Poser was crashing on my render farm's machines every couple of hundred frames - so two 5,000 frame animations took a long time.   (And convinced both of us not to work in POSer any more.)
  •
  • For some reason, the console and hand scanner textures did not come out in the render farm frames - but did in the few that I did myself (mostly towards the end).  Oh well.
  •
  • Yes, this does get off to a very slow start.  There is some stuff going on that was intended to be subtle in 3-D, and winds up being nearly invisible in 2-D.  It kind of gets going around 0:25
  •
  • and then goes on too long.
  •
  • In both cases, I was too lazy to re-edit the audio to match a shorter version

Still, I thought this might be fun to share.

Of course - I can make all sorts of 3-D versions of this, including Cross-Eye and red/green anaglyph.  Let me know if you have one you'd like to see.

Can you give me a translation of what is being said? I keep hearing: nik nik

Yup - "nik nik" is what it's saying.  Combined with the hand gestures (which my be more obvious in this view:

)   I thing you can guess what "nik nik" means.

(it means "no")

I'm amused that in attempting to look human, he gets Victoria 4's default face.

it's been a while since I set it up - but I don't think this is V4's default face - I used Blackhearted's GirlNextDoor4 - and Likely the Beatrice face that came with it - but...   hey, the aliens are new at this human thing.

I guess you're right. It's just one of the common faces.

It could be the default.   This whole project was made MUCH more difficult because the alien morph was incompatible with the GND4 morph.   I had to keep the characters separate and then morph them to some  middle point and switch from one figure to another.  Became a bit of a nightmare, esp. when adding the hair.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I love the camera movement. Seamless. You can make a point that they are in a low gravity environment, hence the floating hair.

Yeah - I thought about lower gravity too.      Maybe they'll fix the hair simulation in the Transmogrifier™ before she has to go out in public.

With hair like that, shampoo maker will hate her!

I toyed with the idea that the hair was based on a TV commercial for shampoo from the 1970's that they received (40 light years away) before they left.  They didn't realize it was in slow motion.

It's sure interesting... the hair is behaving like it's weightless.   I love some of the subtle expression changes on Az's face toward the end of it.  Poser is so almost.  It makes me sad.

Anyway, thanks for sharing, Johnny.

Yeah - kinda sad about Poser.   I had played extensively with the hair weight in a simpler scene and it just seemed that very small changes in the hair dynamics resulted in really massive changes in the results.  Any future work with hair will have to be in Blender.

The expressions were part of why I wanted the close up view - they were largely lost in the long view - esp. with the very wide angle camera I'm using for the Oculus Rift view.

Thanks for you comments, as always, Molly!!
