Okay, I will try my best to critique this.
( I will try to keep all positives till the end)
Vision(4):
The umbrella shows you already had the idea of having her be in this position. But the angle of which the photo is taken is asymmetrical. Not that it is a bad thing, but you might hear the common complaint of, "It detracts from the picture". To me, my question is why did she have an umbrella? Did it start raining? Is she blocking her skin from the sun? What is the purpose of the umbrella in this photo? I understand to bring out the color, but maybe she could have not had the umbrella and if her tattoo is colored. THAT could have been brought out instead, if it was black and white then forget the suggestion.
Originality(3.5):
I think it is the most difficult to critique originality. The reasons is simply that almost everything has been done before. It is better safe then sorry as a critic to also give a 3.5- because even if it looks original to me. There will always be that factor of, what if it is stolen ( though clearly it is not the case here) or the reference or position.ETC. But the reason, I always give it, is because I think it is fair to the artist. Everything the artist does, in itself is original because it is at that place and moment. But nothing warrants a 5.
Easily said, the whole black and white with color being drawn out ( especially an umbrella) has been done before. But that is alright.
Technique(4):
It's a good shot, and I never really like to mess with an artist's technique. But I will ask questions, Like why black and white? Why bring out the color red? (by the way, you should enter a contest *theme is red* I will give you info later) Why this angle? why should she have her back turned? Why didn't you cover up the tattoo?( although I like that her tattoo is visible, I am asking questions that randomly pop up in my head) Why did you want her hair down? Why that background? Did you not like the colors of the trees or the water? Did you have plans for this shot but it didn't go right? Also why is she sitting, couldn't it have been better is she was standing with the umbrella? what if she was facing the camera and used the umbrella to cover her body, would that have also been a nice shot?
Impact(3.5):
Two key factors that make my eyes wander. First the Umbrella with the eye-popping color, and second the very large tattoo on her butt cheek. I know there is an impact here, I feel a little bit but I can't fully understand it. As long as you can feel your own impact and this work inspires others. It fine. If this just gets the replies, "Nice photo" and never gets the awe- inspiring, "Wow- this shot really made me feel..."etc. then not many people are getting it. Especially with the title 'Home'. Does it feel like home? is that her home? Is it spiritual? Most artists don't get that titles also mean something, and obviously need to mean something to the photo. I don't know what home means in this photo. I can guess. But I don't really know.
I like the way you shot it, asymmetrical. Like everything else in life.
I like that you brought out the umbrella to make it the main focus.
I LOVE the black and white.
Although, I thought of telling you to crop it on one side ( the one with just cement not water side, or the complete bottom) I like the photo the way it is. I am sure you have it like that for a reason too.
I know this photo does have a message even if I can't understand it.
This photo has it's own absurdism that can be contemplated.
Nice choice of model for the photo. ( she too is asymmetrical; i.e. tattoo)
Nice background.
Nice position.

I find it's easier to critique photos I like, and try to ask questions that a fan of the artist might never do because it might offend. Thank you for answering my questions. Just like the quote on your signature, Scott Adams has a point. I like the asymmetry in this photo, and I wouldn't want you to crop it. Sometimes cropping things is the worst thing that can be done. I like that the picture and the model are alike. I didn't add this cause I forgot people can't read my thoughts if I don't type it.. Unless I did.. In the positives area...*checking* okay, well it's defined in two places... choice of model and the first one about the picture.
Also, if you know a lot of the human body. Humans are asymmetrical all around, I learn that in a theatre makeup class. The teacher ( I will let her remain nameless, but she is wonderful), she told us; "Have you ever seen someone who has had so much work done.. They look weird?" The students shook their respective heads 'no' or 'yes'. "There are procedures that can make you symmetrical. I will tell you that naturally no one is symmetrical They will just look weird. Because life is not perfect."
I know that what I learned there did give me a lot of reason to critique this photo.
Don't think I didn't like it, cause I always like what I critique. ( Even halohid's nude self portrait) But I felt that no one would ask the questions, or try to thought- provoke the artist. (Think of me playing devil's advocate) Even if I think the artist has good work (cause I like the photo), it is just one of those things I find that if I don't do.. no one else will. Then artists will get ,OMG, or amazing 5 STARS EVERYWHERE. *of course I am exaggerating, but I find that a lot of critiques praise the artist rather then critique and praise, critique and praise*
Okay, I need to get ready for the day. But thanks for answering all my questions, and especially about the umbrella. I UNDERSTAND completely about the umbrella now. Nature has her own way of doing things. But keep those 'mussed' up photos! They are life experiences you want to remember
Also again, I always feel like I have to stress this.
I like your photo. ^^

Thank you so much for this critique! I really like the way you analyze your own thinking while giving these. It's really helpful. So many critiques come from contemporaries of the field (which I love, but thy don't paint a complete picture of what others think).
I want to respond, because I feel you're genuinely looking for answers to those questions. First off, I'll flat-out admit that not everything was as ideal as I would have liked.
The asymmetry of the dock was to avoid branches that were very close to where I was shooting from. I was aware that it was asymmetrical, but I figured (possibly incorrectly since many people commented on that aspect) that it might actually add some interest . I'm not thrilled with that decision. If I had it to do over, I would have moved closer to the model and used a shorter focal length.
The reason for the umbrella is interesting. This was actually a "do-over" shoot. When we did the original shoot, it rained. I was about to cancel the shoot, when a friend suggested just getting some umbrellas and soldiering on. At that point, the red umbrella became central to the shoot. Cass was a gem at coming up with a red dress to match the umbrella at the last minute. Unfortunately, due to the difficulty of shooting in the rain and my general inexperience (this was my second shoot with a model, and the first time attempting anything in the rain), I had very bad camera settings. I ruined most of everything we did that day. So we did it over on a less wet, but still overcast day. This shot was an attempt at re-creating a very beautiful thing she did the first time. The function of the umbrella was more apparent the first time.
The monochrome was intentional. We did two looks those days. One clothed, one nude. For the dress (and matching umbrella), color was important. For the nudes, I was specifically challenging myself to pay more attention to tone and contrast. This shot was a nude with the umbrella, so I made it both color and black-and-white.
I agree with you. I can't give a perfect 5 for originality either. In fact, I usually pad that rating with an extra star just to keep the overall rating as favorable as I want it to be. A true 5 would be something so foreign that the audience wouldn't even know what they were looking at because it literally wouldn't contain elements in people's visual lexicon.
Whenever I do a nude shoot (and I've only done a few but this will likely always be true) I want shots that are modest. In addition to that, I don't want every shot to be a nude portrait (that is, a likeness of an individual person, as opposed to representational of a general unidentified person). There wasn't really so much a "reason" she was facing away. She just happened to be at this time, and it hit me as beautiful -- sometimes it's that simple. It's a variation of "The End", where I did have her slowly walk away from me and eventually stop when she hit the end of the dock. She chose to sit this time. It worked.
I didn't cover up the tattoo because I didn't care. It wasn't a factor when I chose to work with her, and I made no effort to highlight or hide the tattoo. It's just a part of her. In "Symmetry", it was necessary for me to remove the tattoo. Here, it wasn't. Again, I realized the dock wasn't symmetrical, so I didn't think the "butt-balance" would matter. I still don't.
I like the natural look of her hair. It's very fitting of a nature setting.
I loved the colors of the surroundings. It's the reason I chose that lake. But for the nudes, I was specifically going for monochrome and contrast. The lake was beautiful in the shots with the dress. I also did many shots of her covering herself with the umbrella. We even tried many "burlesque" type shots. They were all horrible.
The title - That umbrella felt like shelter to both of us. Cass even titled the one called "Housing Authority".
My biggest thanks to you is that you feel it's worthy of contemplation. Open to interpretation if you will. If I could describe this picture in words, I would have simply written a poem. I'm glad it draws you to think about it.

frankly I read the critique and disagreed. To much though in trying to understand what doesn't need to be understood. Why an umbrella? really? I say why not! It asymmetrical? Seriously who cares!?
I would have perhaps done a triptych, with a blue umbrella, a red and a black. Perhaps each representing a season... Seasonal showers" Maybe red white an blue.
My only criticism is the name Home. It doesn't do it for me. but that's MHO. I would have called it..."partly cloudy with a chance of rain".
Enjoy it for what it is, a lovely form, a splash of colour an all in all a photograph that is attractive to the beholder.
It made me think of the man in the bowler hat...

The triptych idea is interesting. I might try something like that, but do it in 4 actual separate seasons.
The name was hard to come up with. The whole part of the shoot with the umbrella on the dock reminded us both as being some kind of shelter. I kind of settled for "Home".
I'm glad you like it. Thanks for the
