Description EDIT: Lightstreams, and shadow of the books, the wood and window.

This is the new version of my most famous work here on dA. It is still in progress.
I edited the sign in the window and the window itself, because I never really liked the star and couldn't explain why I drew it upsidedown. It had no meaning. So here it is the Hogwarts "H".

How do you like the coloring? It certainly sets a mood, but the color of the objects themself is like non-existing.

Tell me!
And take a look at comment!

I really love this painting; it seems so lifelike. Could you maybe update it again and put Lily Evans in it?

I love this updated version! Coloring, lighting and mood are perfect and I agree wholeheartedly with RandomMumble's comment (she said everything better than I could). Lovely depiction of young Sev. I love the character, but for various reasons I like him better as a youth.

I like coloring. Nice wood and other materials. But I like light the most - I can feel... space? Unfortunately my English is poor and I can use wrong words in wrong ways
Anyway, this work has specific atmosphere Magical, huh.
And Sev

Wow, this is amazing. I can't really find anythings to criticise! I love the enormous space you've created. Though I would like to see perhaps a few more personal items like a wand and a bookbag, a few more quills and stacks of paper, or a cup of tea or something, to show that he's been there for ages... He's just too tidy! I wish there was a library like that in my town.

Cool, they could of have used this in the books or movies during the library based parts, too bad about that mandala you drew in the older version of this picture, I thought it looked nice and somewhat appropriate for Hogwarts, all things considered, and note it was not so much a star as it was a mandala, one usually associated with neo-paganism or occultism although some people who want to be rude often call it satanic.

I love the sense of immenseness here. And the way you've shown the sunlight streaming through the window. It's as if I can feel the gentle warmth and see the dust motes.
I like the golden palate you chose. Like a treasured memory. And the detail to the library itself from the monogram on the window to the vaulted arch and the wood grain. I think the library has always been the part of Hogwarts that I envied the most but I can almost be there through your artwork and my imagination.

You're very welcome. I don't write long reviews usually because I don't want to seem pretentious since I haven't posted anything here. Once upon a time though, I studied art and do work in fashion.

Looking at the smallview I was wondering "Why is Gary-the-Snail hanging out at the end of that table?" At fullview I realize it's a bookend. I always admire excellent perspective because mine's always crap. I also don't think you need to change the color, it's not exactly black and white but it has that classic feel to it.

I love the new version - the architecture, light, shadow and figure. When you mentioned the objects being non - existing, perhaps some more saturated shadow and detail lines? But it's the overall mood that carries this

pikaf In reply to joeyv7 [2011-04-04 18:05:26 +0000 UTC]

thank you!
I meant that things don't have a specific color, like they used to have normally. Everything is just brown, or sepia, but you could also imagine the normal color they would have by normal light to shine through the sepia tone.
A little bit blue, a little bit black or white or dark red. But I would have to rework the whole picture. Maybe I'll try this in a year or so.

Oh, I love this coloring! There's so much feeling in the piece! I think the sepia tones give it a visually hushed feeling, appropriate for a library. Love the details, love the overall.

RandomMumble In reply to pikaf [2011-03-30 15:40:39 +0000 UTC]

I'll try. (But don't expect too much from me - I'm neither a great artist who can help you improve [you're way better than me so it would be a little ridiculous if I'd try to criticise you ] nor am I good with words [or English for that matter])
What I can do is tell you what I see in your picture.

For me it has a dreary aura, but not a hopeless one - the hint of colour is like the 'you need all colours for white light'-thing to me.
Young Snape looks very concentrated in his studying at first, but when I take a closer look and think about the picture and the story I interpret in it that he is studying hard for a goal that is most desirable to him. He also seems a little frustrated - I think it's because he wants to get away from his life at home; learning hard to be allowed to stay forever in a world that appeals much more to him - a world where he thinks he can decide who he wants to be.
So it's between hope and happiness, and disappointment and sorrow.
Other than that he looks a small and lost between the big, old books and in the impressive library - like he is just a small part in one big story - while he is the only human being in the picture which gives me the impression that he is an outstanding part however.
The light streaming in seems hopeful at one hand - sad on the other - for Severus could go out and play in the sun like children are supposed to do gladly, but he obviously feels he has more important things to mind. He is not only thinking about here and now, but about the future - I think nobody told him he has to study more, I think he's doing this on his own. So he is ambitious, but also desperate for a better life. Trying to keep the things he thinks will help him reach his goal in while he's shutting other people and simple fun out.

That sounded really weird, didn't it? I'm sorry - I hope it wasn't too strange. My point is: I really, really like this picture and the story it tells.
(I know I always interpret too much in some pictures - when I tell I think it sounds very aloof)
I'm sorry I can't help you improve - to me your picture looks already wonderful and I'm not good enough to see any mistakes in it so this was all I can say.

pikaf In reply to RandomMumble [2011-04-01 10:05:49 +0000 UTC]

This is the most wonderful comment I ever received to one of my pictures!

You got everything right! More than that your analysis is just what this picture missed. I'm not good in describing my own pictures, though I describe my thoughts through the creation.
The view from a recipient is always other than of the maker. But as we all know the story behind Severus Snape we all get a similar impression. Or maybe not?
So this is what I'm curious about.
And this is what helps me improve what I want to show. So even if you think you are not much of an artist an analysis like that is as helpful as e.g. some advide of how to set perspective.

Thank you very much for your time and your thoughts!!
