Off in the distance, in the damp cement bunker, was the steady and continuous sound of a slow drip, the high pitched "thwip" as the droplet of water hit the standing puddle, the evidence of abandoned hope to all who found themselves trapped in the darkness.
Yet ears were drawn to another sound, the echo of a crinkle, a pungent smell of burning. The sound enticed the ears but the smell repulsed the nose, the stink catching in ones nostrils, forever lingering, always tormenting.
A small glow stepped out into the darkness, the enveloping void of what seemed to be nothingness, however, apparently there was something there in the shadows, creeping out to come play. The emulsion of light danced towards its victim, gently bobbing in the air, like a bubble amidst the vast ocean, free to duck and weave in the currents that pulled it along. Closer it came, taunting and teasing, capturing nervous breaths as it continued with its approach.
Suddenly the silence was broken, a loud "bang" as something unknown was slammed against the floor, a steady scraping bouncing off the walls as the object was drawn closer... and closer.... and closer...
The playful light appeared, hot embers of a smoldering fire, growing brighter, bright enough to catch a glimpse of the demon behind it all, the monster in the night, the holder of such penetrating, glowing eyes. Fear grew in ones chest, making it difficult to breath, ones heart refusing to beat for fear of making any noise, of calling the beasts attention to oneself.
But it was too late.
Those eyes, they honed in, like a predator studying its prey, pulling information from the very soul. Silence once more filled the room, hell fire ignited once more as the wild animal drew in another deep, filtered breath. Smoke curled from the dragons mouth, twisting and enveloping the helpless morsel, filling their nose with the retched, haunting stink.
A snort came from the hidden beast, the gentle warmth of illumination giving away a dastardly smirk that erupted onto those impish lips. In an unanticipated flash of movement, the source of light, the smoldering cherry was sent across the room, breaking apart on the barren floor in a shower of sparks, casting the room back into the darkness that whence it came.
A low baritone vibrated in the void, the playful word more felt then actually heard.
"Run."
