Perhaps once upon a time, Kubo would have been a very different wolf if the Empire hadn't taken the Angarag from him.
Molded by his experiences in the pack, Kubo's once carefree and boyish personality was formed into the beginnings of a troubled young man still coping with the loss of family and friends While Kubo doesn't necessarily mean any ill will by his choices and actions, he lacks the empathy necessary to properly judge when there is a right or wrong time to do or say something. His words are often quick and off the cusp, lacking emotion in tone. Those unfamiliar with his dry humor and melancholy speech may take offense to this, but he does his best to correct their opinion if he catches their displeasure. Kubo's not one to find fault in himself, either, and any complaints usually pass by the boy without a second look back. Opinionated but subdued would describe his mannerisms well, as he doesn't make it a goal to flaunt his colours lest provoked. He keeps an air of control at all times, only losing his temper when someone's pushed him to his wits end.
Kubo treads a fine line between right and wrong, often veering towards whatever path will lead him to a quick and clean solution without much struggle. He's quick to take matters into his own hands if the surrounding party feels less than helpful, and his confidence can be both intoxicating and overwhelming. Duty driven, Kubo's motivation is to prove to the Empire that he is not a force to be reckoned with. They may have taken his old life from him, but every opportunity presented to him to move forward is one he will take without even a smidge of hesitation. He wants his losses to be a marker for something greater, but Kubo struggles separating the difference between progress and regression.
Some days are better than others; Kubo may go days or weeks without feeling anything negative about his life, and other times it feels as though he's made a mistake surviving as long as he did where so many of his family had perished. He feels guilty for succeeding, but he buries the guilt behind a multitude of reasonings and walls and only dwells on the negatives behind closed doors. Due to this, Kubo's true emotions rarely meet the surface. While he actively recognizes these faults, he rarely goes out of his way to fix them since he trusts virtually no one within the Empire and wants to have as few weaknesses around them as possible. Still, for the right wolf, he has the potential to be an open book- for better or worse.

A child lost to the seas of war, found only by fate and her tricky mistress.
Kubo is the youngest child of Nadina and Jhokar, born into the pack by the name of Angarag. His beginnings were quaint, filled with little hardship and personal strife. For the most part Kubo doesn't remember a lot from this time in his life, only that he and his brother were very much loved and taught the fundamentals of their values once they came of age to learn about the pack and its culture. Stories, songs and detailed rituals are lost on his memory, but one that stands out in particular is that of his cousin Khatar, the only son of the King and his mate. He would often take the two boys for romps in the fields, the scent of honey flowers and daisies leaving a permanent mark on the hunter's mind and soul. Most kids were too big for the brothers to play with, but Khatar was always there waiting to greet them on the days they had free of family and lessons.
His warmth, paired with his surviving sibling, is one of the few things that kept Kubo from spiraling after the Empire burned Angarag to the ground.
Truth be told, Kubo wouldn't be able to tell anyone about what happened that night. His memory is a fleeting field of flashing colours, loud noises and false promises. Thinking back on it brings too much anger and guilt, something that the young hunter does his damndest to bury six feet below.
But with the death of the pack came his life in the Empire, a series of trials and tribulations that a young boy should never have to experience. He had to earn his place, first and foremost, and at the age of four months he was placed under the care of a mentor that was far kinder than they had any right to be. It was a lucky thing, for most other kids he saw had cruel or cold wolves to care for them. But even the pseudo-parent's tenderness couldn't soothe the wound in his heart, and he quickly closed off any attempts of affection or reassurance that she or other wolves tried to show him. He didn't really understand why he did it, but it felt natural; a safety blanket, one that no one could strip away from him.
The same couldn't be said for his sibling, although Kubo kept to himself in the early months that they were there, and only during his first year did he begin to reopen up to his brother. It was a slow process, one that took much trial and error to fix whenever he would snap or get upset, but one that his sibling didn't respond to in anger or sadness. They both understood the loss they faced, and each of them had to grieve in their own way before they could heal. For Kubo, all of that healing meant sheltering himself from feeling too much at any given point, and his head was pushed into work and study to avoid confronting whatever memories or nightmares lie just behind his sleeping eyelids.
Part of his desire to get things done was what made his mentor proud; she rarely had to reprimand him, and their hunts and daily tasks would go smoothly without a hitch. It was a routine he'd fallen into for the better part of a year; wake up, chat with his sibling, get to work, come home and listen to the lessons and corrections of the day. It kept him composed, kept him busy enough to move on with his life and promise himself that he would make this worth it even if it killed him. They survived for a reason, is what their mentor told them one day, and part of Kubo desperately wanted to believe it. Her compassion wasn't meant for the likes of the Empire, and it seemed as though lady fate agreed with him.
One day, she simply disappeared- another wolf he'd grown to trust and look up to, gone within the year.
He'd found her body at the waterside of their usual hunting ground several days later, and he buried her alone that early morning under the guise of fog and soft, somber light. He lied to anyone and everyone who asked if he'd seen her or heard from her at all. He ignored the theories and rumors surrounding just what happened to her.
There was no sympathy; only curiosity, only an example to be made out of someone's kind heart.
Kubo wondered why he didn't run that day, or the day after that. Or the weeks or months beyond that.
Part of it was fear, part of it denial. But mostly Kubo sought clarity, and he believes that sticking this course through will see him to the answers he needs. He only has to keep going, regardless of everything around him.
