Exquisite - the range and depth of blues, the great sense of vastness, the combination of land, water and mountains. A real delight.

Splendid colours and a wonderful depth of field ! I particularly like the contrast between the luminous beach and the green, almost mossy-looking, grass. This (as well as the low mountains in the distance) immediately shows we truly are in northern territory... despite the deceiving turquoise waters. Well done.

Thanks for the kind words! Since you pointed out some well observed things here I would like to add some words too

This picture is taken from a mountaintop on Andøya, which is an island on the coast of northern Norway, well above the arctic circle. There can be quite harsh weather conditions as storms that come in from the ocean and polar areas often hit land first here. Therefore vegetation is sparse, as you see on the photo you won't see many trees for example. Grass areas contain lots of moss so that's why it has such color.

Although it looks like a beach area that will attract many people it actually is quite desolate (hence the title) Partly because summer temperatures hardly rise over 20°C and water temperatures are ice cold all year long, but also because it's difficult to reach over land since it's blocked by steep and rocky mountain slopes on all sides. There was a settlement once (you'll see some old houses and barns just off the beach on the left) which has it's origins all the way back to the Viking age. It was last inhabited around the year 1900.

I visited this place for the first time last summer and it was 25°C with almost no wind... guess I had the odds on my side!

Many, many thanks for this detailed and captivating explanation ! It manages to add new layers to your already beautiful picture since, to my shame, I hadn't noticed the remnants of the settlement, for instance. It certainly is a harsh but wondrous place. I'm grateful to you for sharing this.
