Description
A tutorial for my most recent piece, "The Rider". I hope this is easy to follow and that it will help to explain my work flow, as well as possibly be a learning tool for someone out there. I tried to document the process each evening I worked on it. Unfortunately, it ended up taking awhile to finish since I had to take some time to let it dry between layers. Hopefully, this will help someone! Here is the final image: [link]
A special thanks to:

I love how much the character on the horse changes in the process, first it looks like an female indian, then a male indian, than a male roman soldier, then a mix between the two....kinda confused as what he's supposed to be?

the level of detail you have is amazing. I like this finished painting and the two with the women and the fish very much.

Stunning painting, and thanks for letting us in on your process. I didn't know you could use acrylics for the underpainting of oils, that is very interesting...I have used a drying medium with oils for underpaintings, it makes the washes dry much faster, but perhaps not as fast as acrylics.
Hehe, I'm kind of amazed that the rider went through so many transformations. Also, I love the mountains.

All praise has been given before me, but I just wanted to chime in with a tip that might help you quicken the underdrawing/painting stages. After the charcoal/pencil on canvas, spray it with workable fixative. You won't lose the values and you won't pick up charcoal in your paints.

Thanks so much! That's a really good idea. My paints became sooo muddy when they were mixed with the charcoals.

It's a quick modern fix. I think the old masters used a really thin varnish.

I've been so afraid of trying oils for a long time. I'm so very used to translucent media and the price of oils and materials, but it seems like it's gotten much more reasonable over the years. I may have to refer to this when I finally get off my bum and drag out some of the blank canvases gathering dust in my basement.
Really groovy tutorial here. I didn't realize you could mix acrylics and oils. Seems like it'd make it a bit easier if you're detailing mainly with acrylic and only adding the finishing touches with oil? I'd be curious to know the proportion of using one over the other for your paintings. (ie. if you use more acrylics in the picture than oils?)
I'm totally looking forward to your next tut! I hope you're doing one for pencils too

When you mix the oils with linseed oil it helps to make them a lot thinner and more translucent. Also, be sure to never put acrylics on top of oils...only the other way around! Nothing ever really goes on top of oils. But making an acrylic base really helps to speed things up, I have found ^_^

Fantastic tutorial - how long did the process take? Thanks for posting this, it's fascinating and amazing to see the amount of work that goes into your painting
Great piece, too- it doesn't look like it is an unfamiliar subject for you
