Description
A tutorial for my most recent piece, "The Rider". I hope this is easy to follow and that it will help to explain my work flow, as well as possibly be a learning tool for someone out there. I tried to document the process each evening I worked on it. Unfortunately, it ended up taking awhile to finish since I had to take some time to let it dry between layers. Hopefully, this will help someone! Here is the final image: [link]
A special thanks to:

Thanks so much! It took 8-9 afternoons. Each step of the tutorial was an afternoon I spent on it. I just had to wait a long time before completing each step for the paint to dry >.<

Best tutorial I've read in a LONG while!
I always work on paper rather than canvas because I could never understand how you can sketch and line on a canvas... but now I get it! And you make me want to give canvas a try!

That's amazing! I was aware of the digital art technique that involved a color layer applied on top of a grayscale layer, but I hadn't even considered that it was feasible with traditional artwork. Thank you for the excellent tutorial!

Its really wonderful how you're able to combine so many mediums together! Thye colors, esp the pink and the cool green of the skin tones are really good ^^

You used charcoal, acrylics and oils? Wow, talk about mixed media. Never would've guessed that you changed the rider's position half-way through... easy to do in photoshop, not so much in traditional mediums. Really cool to see the step-by-step!

Thanks Tom! I was really worried it would end up being too sporadic to follow. I always change ideas halfway through a piece ^_~ But, I'm glad you liked it! Thank you for your input when I first mentioned it in my journal. It really helped me to decide which direction to go for in the tutorial.

for some reason, am partial to the cavalier in img 5 with the chiaroscuro of the lower figures. glad to see others work similarly though
