Description
This beautiful girl was at the creek when we arrived to do some snorkeling. She wouldn't hold still in the leaves so I had to use the ugly rubbermaid to get the shot. If she looks a little lumpy, it is because she was gravid. This was a first for me, I had never seen a hognose snake before.Southwest Missouri

This isn't a Western, but an Eastern, Hoggie. They have very different markings from the Westerns, as well as a less-pointy snout. They usually do a better Cobra impersonation, too, even though this one's not hooding up.

Ahhh, thank you. I didn't do my research, or I did and then mis-printed the species.
She never did hood up or play dead. She was very docile, unless I put her down for a picture, then she just flat ran away.
I think I have just been drooling over the western hognose at Kingsnake.com too much lately. That place is like snake lover crack.

Yes, I know about the addictive properties of Kingsnake.com! Same with reptile shows, which are like my version of a Caribbean cruise when they come around here!
I used to catch many Eastern Hogs, of various color morphs and patterns, but it's been over 15 years since I've seen one in the wild. A combination of many drought years here in SC, along with pesticides used in agriculture, has reduced the toad populace to nil in many areas, to the extent that the snakes have followed them to extinction in those areas. Unlike the Westerns, Eastern Hogs are almost impossible to switch over to rodents, which is why so few people keep or breed them. They are bigger and much more "Cobra-like" in appearance than the Westerns, and have more color morphs that occur naturally, including melanistic(jet black) and bright orange, but they are just too much aggravation to keep.
