Description Death accompanies each mortal twice in life. At birth, she speaks to them, but since no one remembers what she says, it is not known why.

When they die, she guides them to what lies beyond their mortal years. Mortals fear Death. They fear the sunless lands to which she guides them. They feebly attempt to placate her. They do not love her. Once though, a long time ago, a dreamer celebrated her gift in a song, and came closer to a true description of Death than any mortal since.

One day in every century, Death takes on mortal flesh, to better comprehend what the lives she takes must feel like, to taste the bitter tang of mortality: this is the price she must pay for being the divider of the living from all that has gone before and all that must come after.

Oh wowies. It's a very beauitful piece. It's great that you didn't just rush out there and copy all of what Death looks like in the books, but found context in other pictures. Bravo. I love Death etc also. They're marvellous characters.

Hmm. I much preferred Delirium. This doesn't seem anything like Death as introduced by Gaiman. Death is cheerful, you know, playful, cute like a little girl. Not grim and goth like that girl you used. Sorry, but I don't think this is Gaiman's Death.

I haven't read the source of inspiration, but your piece definitely makes me want to read it. General conspiration to make me read Gaiman, it seems. Andy did it (very efficiently so) and now you're doing it as well...

Impressive piece. Taking into consideration that she is Death, I think she looks pretty much alive. I'd have thought her to be paler...but then, what do I know? Common stereotypes. I love how you placed the stairs in the background...and those goldfish...I wonder how Slim and Wandsworth are related to her...

*grin*

Yup, it's all a conspiracy because we think you really should read all of Gaiman's stuff You'd find out about the goldfish and things like that... plus my manips might make more sense...

Thanks a lot for the comment!

It's a meeeean conspiracy, knowing that I've got to read the obligatory stuff first *grrr*. And what exactly would I have to read to understand this?

Andy made me read Coraline because I wanted to know what the items in her pic meant...

Hmm...

Well, I've got a big pile of stuff for you then... You should definately read the whole Sandman collection (10 books), then there's the two about death, you might wanna read the books of magic too, then there's Neverwhere, American Gods, of course there's still Black orchid, etc, etc... If you ever have a spare moment I can supply you with any of these, they are really reccomended reading, ask Andy I'm sure she'll agree

*sigh* But thanks for the offer, I might take you up on that one day. American Gods is waiting next to my bed, still unfinished... I've only managed to read Coraline, Smoke & Mirrors, and Good Omens so far. A long way to go...

I'm really picky when it comes to Death...I love how you added her two goldfish...because they shouldn't be missed...I also like how you presented her...but the look on her face...she is not perky enough...not happy enough...BUT...as I've said, I'm too picky when it comes to death, so...this is actually a wonderful way of presenting her...but when it comes to Death I have to nag a little...but pay no attention to it

Pixelcoma In reply to greenfaery [2003-10-15 07:14:03 +0000 UTC]

I understand... The death we all came to like was Didi the perky little goth girl... But sometimes even in the comics you can see her true nature unforgiving and doing the job that must be done... Maybe not enjoying it but doing it nevertheless... I tried to capture that side a little more while still retaining her "human" side, such as the goldfish... I think Anthropogena makes a really good death...

"I'm not blessed, or merciful. I'm just me. I've got a job to do, and I do it. Listen: even as we're talking, I'm there for old and young, innocent and guilty, those who die together and those who die alone. I'm in cars and boats and planes; in hospitals and forests and abbatoirs. For some folks death is a release, and for others death is an abomination, a terrible thing. But in the end, I'm there for all of them."

As well I wasn't feeling that perky myself this weekend so I guess that kinda reflects as well...

Thanks for an honest opinion, I'll try to do the rest of the endless more justice

I understand why you wanted or felt like showing her more mature and more serious side, I really do, that's why I said you shouldn't listen to my nitpicking, since I have a very fixed picture of Death and how I'd like to see her (since she was the last one friends and family saw and I do hope they had a blast with her when they met her).
Anyway, I do love how you presented her, how you managed to show her serious side...

Again

Gaiman apparently does a very good job in inspiring people. And honestly, it inspires the best in you (and some other DA gal I know ). It's the little details here...the reflection on the Ankh..the gold fishes (and I can't say I know what they stand for)...and the symbolic stairway into...heaven? Haha...or some other place anyway...
