Description Front and back view of my Vanille costume from Final Fantasy XIII. All made by me. Debuted at Otakon 2010 in Baltimore, MD.

Thoughts:
When I first started playing Final Fantasy XIII, I planned to cosplay as either Sarah or Lightning; Vanille got on my nerves. Her accent seemed to be really inconsistent, and I found her annoying! As I got further into the game, I started to get attached to her as a character; right about when she and Sazh broke off and fought together for a while. Sazh and Vanille are such an adorable duo! Her weird and random little mannerisms sometimes remind me of myself. After I beat the game, I knew that I REALLY wanted to cosplay as her even more! I won't spoil the ending for those of you that have not beaten it yet, but she and Fang play a VERY large role in the game's storyline. The ending of Final Fantasy XIII always makes me tear up no matter how many times I watch it - It's just SO good! It has ended up being one of my favorite Final Fantasy games. I was super excited to cosplay as Vanille, and this costume is a lot of fun to wear. It's one of my most comfortable costumes to date, and I plan wearing to many conventions and improving upon it as I go! I will probably make a few different weapons for her as well; I had a lot of fun making her first weapon (The Binding Rod).

This is currently my favorite costume.

Construction notes:
Wig: This came to me in a milkshake pink color, and I was really disappointed. I ended up custom coloring it with orange Prisma markers...and I'm actually really happy with it now! I love the vibrant orange color it came to be. I went for the more orange look Vanille has in game rather than the more salmon color she has in CG art. I also chose to the leave the single curls rather than messing them up like hers...just because I think it's so cute that way!

Beads and accessories: All of the little beads that are not black or white were hand painted with nail polish! It took me forever, and it probably killed a lot of brain cells that I needed. The center large "bone" looking bead was made from paper clay. The back plate ornament is Crayola Model magic attached to a cut-out piece of polystyrene plastic for durability, then painted and sealed with acrylic pants. The pouch was made from a printed calico cotton print that gives the illusion of a weird burlap looking fabric. The bracelets were found on the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ, and the fat white braces are strips of vinyl painted white. The belt is actually Crayola Model Magic on top of a flexible black vinyl. I may end up making this again with a different method, since I'm not sure how long it will last, but it did come out looking pretty neat! I have learned that Model Magic is pretty darn flexible while making this costume. I'll be using it for a lot more in the future!

The L'cie tattoo was printed into this awesome tattoo paper by Fire Lily, then placed on my lower butt check! XD
I also wear really pretty green contacts with this costume to complete the look.

Fur, Shirt and Skirt: I bought the fur from Mendels.com, and it was really expensive, but well worth the price. It's super soft and realistic looking without being real fur. I pleated the fur and then attached it to a strip of brown vinyl, then added the vinyl flap with straps on top. It attaches around my waste with a vinyl strap and Velcro. The brown vinyl was left over from my Penelo costume. I used a pink knit material for the shirt and sewed a strapless bra into it. The Skirt is made of orange cotton (because that's the easiest thing to dye gradients into), and the front fabric flap is pleated yellow cotton with an orange gradient dyed in.
Boots: The boots were dark brown faux suede cowboy style boots from Target.com. I colored them with acrylic paint mixed with textile medium and they do very well with wear! No cracking with this method; I have had great success with it on multiple cosplay shoes! I hand colored some white fur strips with frown Prisma Marker to make them not such a bright white color, then attached them to the tops of the boots. These things are REALLY comfortable! I adore them!

Weapon: The entire weapon is a Wonderflex base covered in Crayola Model Magic. The acorn looking things have half of a foam ball as their base. It took me a long time to make this, mostly because of the dry times in between each application of clay and detailing. Neon Genocide braided strips of brown vinyl onto the handle for me. The weapon does not fold like hers does, but I'm really happy with how it looks, so I wouldn't want to fold it and put it on my butt anyways! The weapon is really light and really durable and flexible. I enjoy it very much!

Awe.. Such a cute Vanille! ^.^

I was wondering, what would you recommend to be the best Textile to Acrylic ratio when it comes to painting suede? I'm possibly going to be painting some suede boots for my Serah cosplay and since I've never painted suede before, I'm a little afraid I might ruin them.. So I figured I'd ask somebody who has! Thanks so much

Your cosplay is really really great! It's perfectly done!
If I'm not disturbing, I wanted to ask you which color you chosse for the fake fur. I took a look at the site you linked us and there are a lot of types! I am searching fake fur for Vanille and Fang, so it will be really helpful to know which one you chosse ^_^ Again, very well done!

Thanks! I actually don't remember the exact fur that I chose. I was looking through their site just now, and I think it was the Cinnamon Cubby bear in the short fur section on the Mendels website? Because they are so pricey (but worth it!), I recommend ordering swatchs from things you think may work just to make sure you like them for your costume. They are great about sending out swatches! Sorry for the long time before my reply! I hope they helps!

yeah I thought ohh this will be an easy costume, but it ended up taking a longer time than I thought for all that bead stuff. The beads are all connected to stretchy string and there is a clasp that closes in the back of it.

sorry for the long wait in reply! It's been a while since I made that costume, so I sort of forget! XD The thing in the back of the neck has two holes on top. I think the front beads that up to my neck have extra string that just ties into the two holes on the top of the back thing. The weight of the back thing keeps the beads up. That's sad that I forgot, but i've worked a lot of other things since then, so it's in the back of my brain! lol

I made the base of it from Wonder Flex, and then covered it in Crayola Model Magic. The "acorn" things were foam balls I cut in half then covered with the Crayola Model Magic. Hope that helps!

I really love your costume, it turned out beautiful <3 and I'm really surprised to see that is so similar to the original even in the most little details, it isn't frequent in elaborate costumes like this.
I read that there are a lot of questions, and I'm sorry, but I have to make one too. Well, how did you make the circles around the neck? I'm starting my Vanille costume, but I can't find anything that would be good for them ;_; Can you give me a tip?

pixiekitty In reply to Tifax [2011-03-05 02:22:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I used clear tubing from Lowes. I inserted wire into them to shape them, and painted them with brown acrylic paint. I covered them with a clear acrylic sealer (I used Liquitex Matte Varnish which you can get at Michaels) to prevent it from chipping or rubbing off. i thought it would peel off from the rubber at first, but it actually works quite well.

Hello, your costume is simply beautiful! I'm making a Vanille costume also and I was wondering about the type of string you used under all the beading? Yarn or just regular... lol I don't know what "regular" string might even be! And you used two different sizes of beads yes? So the white looked bigger than the black?
On the belt, is the blue stone real and how did you get it to stay? Hot glue? I also ask permission to use your designs for the belt and back-plate, and of course I would credit you to it.

pixiekitty In reply to SaijLorelei [2011-01-02 19:50:40 +0000 UTC]

For the two strands of beads that go around my upper chest, I used a stretchy string so I could pull it over my head to get it on. The lower string that goes around my ribs is a non-stretch waxed coated string that fastens with a little necklace clasp in the back. These types of string should be easily found in the beads sections of craft stores like A.C. Moore or Michaels. I did use two different sizes of beads for the black and white. I went the cheap route and used pony beads that I found at Michaels. I made the gemstone on my belt out of Paper Clay, and I painted with several layers of glossy teal nail polish. I super glued it to the belt. If you do credit me of course, then I don't mind if you look at my costume for ideas. Thanks

Myrionette [2010-10-03 15:03:54 +0000 UTC]

this was done really well!!!!!!

how'd you attach all the strands of beads together? ie: the two top ones, to the core ones that go down the middle?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pixiekitty In reply to Myrionette [2010-10-12 05:41:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! The front string of beads has two of those large red beads that I made of clay. On the one red bead, I attached a long black bead onto the front. The bottom string of beads goes through that bead to attach to the center beads. The two upper bead strings are on stretchy string so I can get this weird thing on. Hope that makes sense, because it doesn't really make sense to me, lol. It's hard to describe something like that without showing it in person or using a diagram.

Yes, of course! I credit that i use your costume for the back.
Certainly i would change the colour of this Spine-thing. I think it was brown, or not?
You use yellow, so i would change some things ...

I printed many references for vanilles costume. Basically i use the Main-Artwork, but there you canΒ΄t see the back of Vanille, so i use your costume-photo for the back.
How many pear-strings are there for example.
I found only grainy game -pictures from her back, so iΒ΄m glad i see this.

pixiekitty In reply to Pentragonart [2010-09-27 10:43:32 +0000 UTC]

It's not a problem at all, as long as you do credit that you used the back of my costume as reference. I think I just made up the amount of beads back there honestly and the back of the beading around the waist.

Pentragonart [2010-09-24 10:31:55 +0000 UTC]

I want to cosplay Vanille too and search for good pictures from her on google.
There I saw this and print it out, so i have a model, haha

It looks very impressive, exspecially the coat! How do you have the wrinkle licked?
(my englisch ... i hope you now what i mean?

I love how you made your Vanille costume ,I've been re working my Lightning and I've been wanting to tackle other projects too...Vanille's costume scares me because of the bead work! how do you keep the body lace/beads from breaking O__o ? like if you're posing for different photos and the string that held your beads together snapped? I think thats probably my biggest fear XD ...its managed to keep me away from even starting her costume as an idea !
