Description
This character is a bit different from the other ones I've posted. Rather than being from the witch story I've got going on, this character is from a bit of short story that wouldn't fit in the witch story. Right now, it's called "Malefic Vestiges".
I meant to upload this a few days ago, but I ended up redrawing the whole thing :/
Name: Astraea van Geirskögul
Age: 21 (as of 1127 AW)
Nationality: Valfreyja
Region of birth: The province of Geirskögul in the Valfreyjan Dominion
Occupation: Dark Mage/Vestige Researcher
Likes: Snow, fire, books, having a secluded place to herself, daggers, cats, pursuing her life goals, libraries.
Dislikes: Unambitious people, condescending nobility, dark vestiges, her father (although it's complicated).
Abilities: Fire magic, dark magic
Personality: Astraea finds it very easy to get invested in her work, especially her research. However, her curiosity and desire make discoveries comes with the flaw of impatience. As a result, she's bound to make risky decisions to hasten her research. Among people, Astraea is amicable, especially towards her teachers due to her eagerness to learn, but prefers to keep her distance in her downtime. She has her reasons for doing so, but Astraea finds it too personal to say why. Astraea fantasizes about having adventurers similar to the many books she reads, but fears that she won't ever get the opportunity. Despite her lack of social engagement, she isn't unapproachable. Astraea likes helping people and sharing knowledge. To her, knowledge is useless if it can't be utilized or shared. However, it is best to not test her patience when she is lending aid, for she has errands she says she needs to get back to doing.
Astraea was born into a minor noble house of the Valfreyjan Dominion. When she was little, Astraea had a prestigious life, being tutored in magic ever since her prodigal potential for pyromancy was discovered. There was a conflict involving the minor houses of Valfreyja and it resulted in the collapse of her noble house. Due to the intricacies of Valfreyjan nobility, it resulted in the shaming of all members of the House, even to Astraea, who was just a child when it happened. As punishment for his involvement within the conflict, Astraea's father was disgraced and he was forced to disown and disinherit Astraea. When this happens, disowned children are treated similarly to illegitimate children, who were already attached to very negative social stigmas among society. Astraea was sent away to live with distant relatives who lived as commoners of the Geirskögul, in the far north province where she was far from the judgement of the high society.
Despite the rough circumstances of her childhood, Astraea grew up in a stable household and was even admitted into the Strigine School of the Arcane Arts to enhance her magical prowess. A few years later, she graduated from the school at the age of sixteen. Not long after, her father re-entered her life by approaching her with the prospect of getting her re-legitimized as heir to their House and help restore the collapsed house. However, her father told Astraea that she had to build up a respectable reputation so that the Valfreyjan Duke that the house answered to can formally legitimize her. Apparently her graduation from the Strigine School wasn't enough, so her father sponsored her enrollment to the Wolfen Academy, where many go to learn leadership skills and combat arts. Her father stated that if Astraea graduated from the Wolfen Academy, then the Duke might consider legitimizing her. Thus, Astraea attended the academy.
((From here on out are spoilers for this short story going forward, but the story skips forward in time a bit and results in the older Astraea pictured in the reference. Because of that, this is short.)) Later in the story, when she's past her academy days, Astraea lives with her commoner family, but gets involved in researching magic phenomena relevant to the plot's overarching conflict.
Here are some story breadcrumbs
- Disowned and illegitimate people do not follow typical name conventions. Commoners have a given name and surname while nobles have that in addition to a middle name and title. Illegitimate/Disowned commoners only hold onto their given name. Highborn illegitimate/disowned people who are acknowledged by members of their noble lineage hold a slightly different variation. The structure they have is "(Name) van (home province)" to denote their place of origin while ignoring their noble name.
- Malefic vestiges are compressed nodes of magic known to grant wielders of it great power, allowing for limited uses of dark magic. There is an unorthodox use for them that is a secret among the nobility of Valfreyja. There are nine known types of vestiges.
- Geirskögul is the northernmost province of the Valfreyjan Dominion. Valfreyja is a nation on the continent of Vedfol.
- The story has multiple characters and perspectives taking place at various times.
- Astraea and two other characters act as the detectives of the story.
((I rewatched too much Avatar: The Last Airbender and Game of Thrones, played too much Fire Emblem, and read quite a bit of Percy Jackson to conjure up this story. This story also takes scrapped elements and characters from my WoV/ZCA story from years ago))
