Oh crap! This Japanese military flag, which symbolizes imperialism, made public to the world. But I heard that this flag made controversial and totally offensive to Chinese and South Koreans because it also signifies the expansion of the Japanese empire into the world and the Japanese invasion against both Korean and Chinese territories. However, this flag stole nations, engaged destructive wars, drove out millions of people as well as P.O.Ws in several battlefields and committed war crimes against humankind like having the women comforted before being killed. Compared to the offensive symbol to Jewish people in western world called the Nazi Swastika. Both are threat to bring destruction upon humanity since the destructive war had begun in the history. You do realize the flag of the Rising Sun was a symbol of the Japanese Military long before the actions committed prior to and during the Second World War, right?Β It was not created or used only by the likes of Tojo unlike the Nazi Swastika.Β By this logic, you could say this about the flag of any historical great power.Β
The Russian Tricolor is offensive and controversial because of the displacing of the eastern steppe people!
The American Flag is offensive and controversial for the killing and displacing of the Native Americans!
The French, Spanish, Portuguese and British flags are offensive and controversial because of those they colonized and oppressed!
I could go on.Β The point is no nation has a perfect past, and calling a long-running national symbol of a nation offensive and symbolic of imperialism is a rock you can throw at almost any country with a history of foreign global activity.

you could use this argument to ban most countries flags because most countries have committed atrocities in their past, under the American flag treaties have been broken and genocide has been committed but we can still see the good in the flag and it doesn't represent those things to most Americans. the rising sun flag predates Imperial Japan and World War II by centuries going all the way back to the samurai days to say that the flag only represents war crimes and imperialism strikes me as cherry picking history to support an anti-Japanese agenda, "he who's country is without sin should cast the first stone".
