Description Art trade with , using her OCs Saphira (left) and Rudolf (right).

Hope you enjoy my attempt at your characters exploring a cavern together! The reference didn't include their shoe colors or styles so I tried to pick something safe. And I'm sorry this took a long time; my tablet's cord (which was already fraying) finally wore too thin to be able to draw with it, so I had to order a new one and wait a few days to finish this.

Hello from ProjectComment

I do like the overall shading and colouring on this piece. I think the minimal highlights from the openings around them, as well as the inclusion of additional shading on the stage right side of both characters, in addition to the shadow cast by the cave they're in. I'd personally have not included that myself, feeling the shadow cast by the cave was enough, so I do think this attention to detail works well and while it may seem like a subtle addition, I do feel it adds to the piece overall.

My biggest criticism with this piece is their poses, as they both look nearly identical to me. Granted there are minor differences as I can see that Rudolf's forward leg has more of a bend to it, his stage right arm isn't bent back as much as Saphira's and his stage left hand is at a slightly different angle, but comparing the two looks more to me like I'm looking at a "spot the difference" puzzle than a foot race. I appreciate there aren't many available poses when it comes to running, but I feel it may have been better to change it up a little more on this piece. Plus different people have different "styles" of running. I tend to do a lot at the gym myself and have always stylised how I move my arms after the T-1000 in Terminator 2, and have yet to see another do a different style while others keep their arms around their waist level (for example).

I also find I agree with the ProjectComment member about the disproportionate limbs; whilst I do like the fact Rudolf's forward leg is a tad longer, as this implies foreshortening, it also looks like the upper leg is longer than the lower half. This may be down more to the Sonic art style (something I've personally not touched in a very long time) but it does look off to me. I also feel both pairs of arms look a little unnatural due to how both are at an exact 90 degree; I'd never personally have my arms at such an angle when I am and it gives me the impression they're trying to hold their arms at those specific angles, rather then letting them move more naturally.

However I do feel Saphira's legs look much better when compared to Rudolf's. While the forward leg may look a little too straight for my liking (I also used to train in marital arts, and was always advised to never let a limb "lock" by letting it go completely straight), I feel the bend in the backwards one looks much more natural and fitting the style. I also like the expression on her face, showing how she's struggling to keep up and unhappy about losing. Part of me does wonder if she's maybe struggling to match Rudolf's speed and wonders if maybe droplets of sweat or sighs she's breathing harder could help add to that.

I also really like how you've done the background. The overall cave looks great with the detailing on the rocks in the background behind the two of them and I also feel the various natural openings are a great addition with the way they let light in, as well as shape it. I feel it really help make it seem like this is something nature has created over vast centuries and that adds to the piece in my eyes. I also really like the sand on the floor, both the way it's "shaped" thanks to the right and the inclusion of footprints from their run. I fact some look like they overlap each other is an excellent attention to detail in my opinion. Their shadows on the floor are also great and I like how stretched they look, especially as they get further from the light source.

Thank you for the lengthy comment!

I thought it would make sense for the top half of Rudolf's forward leg to look longer, since part of the bottom half (including his ankle) is obscured by his shoe.

But the poses do look quite similar, now that you mention it; I was so concerned about getting the perspective on the two characters right that I forgot to make sure their positions were distinct enough. And you're not the first one who's mentioned the angles of the legs looking weird; I can tell that's something I need more practice on.

You're welcome.

I can definitely see where you're coming from and I do think you're nearly there, but I personally don't see the ankle being hidden by the shoe. To me, from the position of the foot and his leg it looks more like his shoe comes up to around the middle of his shin. However, that is from my perspective, and it could be perhaps due to the angle of the leg.

I can see that as an easy trap to fall into. I've lost count of the times I've either overlooked a problem until the piece was done or focused so much on something else I never checked how it looked in the grand scheme of things. Do you tend to zoom in when you're working on a piece, and rarely look at it as a whole? I know I certainly do.

Oh, yeah, lol, especially with lineart because it has to be precise, and in the past I've had to focus on making my strokes less shaky.

I've had to use a hand stabiliser to help with that. A friend has suggested using my elbow to draw rather than my hand, but I'm still learning how to do that.

Amazing!
There are so many great things about this drawing; let me get started!

The lighting and shading, of course. More experienced and nit-picky artists will comment a full guide book to improve shading, but honestly I think it's perfect. Look; you even changed the color of the lineart when the light hits the charactersβ€”that isn't something everyone thinks about. In fact, all the lineart is well-balanced smooth The detail of the footprints behind them is great, and I especially love that their fur is flowing with the rush of the wind. Their expressions help set the mood along with the lighting, and I'm glad that their faces aren't stiff or anythingβ€”they've very natural expressions. Their poses are also great for the action that is taking place; it's not awkward or stiff, and the Sonic-character proportions are perfect. The background details are phenomenal, too, it's easy to tell that this piece took a long time and lots of love and effort went into it.

Alright, as with every drawing, there are a tiny bit of areas where there could be minimal improvement. For example, the hands, which are always really hard to draw, sometimes look a little robotic or geometric-like. The character in front has his left hand (the one that's farther away) in the wrong position. It would be turned to the side a bit, instead of completely facing forward; having his first like that almost make him look like he's dancing Also, their limbs are sometimes slightly disproportional. Sometimes the forearm is thicker than the other part of the arm, sometimes both parts are equal, sometimes the legs are a bit wriggly, and sometimes one arm is thicker than the other. It's actually only visible in the brown character, the green one I find perfect

That's really it, since you've done an amazing job at setting a mood and even giving the characters personality through their expressions and actions. I hope I was a bit helpful and that everything made sense!
I wish you wonderful day

I can't really explain it, but some parts just doesn't fit to the movement. Also when it comes to shadows, I would make it a bit lighter and sharper in some parts, to make it look a little more realistic.
