Description mixed media - 2023

My proudest work yet. Eden to me is the culmination of all the recent textural experiments I've been trying out.

Using "Superflat Blueprint Jay" as the basis and skeletal sketch (it was never meant to be standalone artwork but more of a rough draft for Eden) I decided to try some concepts I had in my head and experimented with the textures.

The interesting about mixed media esp in the context of blending watercolor pencils with other materials is the unpredictability of the results.

I say unpredictability not in the final product when using watercolor pencils (which is usually for my process pretty contained and controlled) but how you can manipulate the work afterward.

Usually, there are a few ways I utilize watercolor pencils, I can wet the tip beforehand, use it like paint, color it like pencils, or wet the surface of the paper then apply the material.

But an interesting idea arises when you mix other materials and watercolor pencils to edit/experiment with the artwork after it's finished.

By distorting or combining methods of change you can add weirder results to the original work.

In this case, because the original was a mix of various water-soluble materials I used a few of the watercolor pencil methods for applying to wet the surface of the artwork, which led to bleeding of the materials in a strange way ("I can wet the tip beforehand... apply the material").

I then added newer textures over the now wet surface and added additional detail also when it was dried, which created a contrast of colors depending on when the additional stuff was added.

And finally, the most exciting process for me was attempting to combine electronic elements of editing and experimentations of lighting for the final product.

I tested different light settings, camera filters, light screens on the work, and digital editing to distort the work.

Stylistically the work and my future direction will probably continue with my interesting in traditional eastern art, Japanese ukiyo-e, super flat movement, contemporary art, glitches, internet culture, and experimental art.

A newer input of influences would be my recent resurgence of interest in early 20th-century modernism and post-impressionism.

Ultimately the final artwork becomes vastly differs from the original draft and starting point, really it becomes a mixed media work with mixtures of technology and traditional methods.
