Edit: Please only leave a comment about the actual tutorial. I'm getting a lot of irrelevant critiques on the lineart, which really doesn't have anything to do with learning to color. ;0;

How did you do the shadows on the hair? i'd like to have that explained please? since it looks great.

Popo-Licious In reply to Ginace [2012-09-22 16:36:29 +0000 UTC]

Do you mean in the very last image? I flattened the base, shadow, and highlight layers for her hair, and then I lightly went over certain parts with the burn tool.

When you have the shadows and highlights in colour green and red, how do you change them to the gradient?
You use the magic want and then you use the gradient or what?
Thank you in advance

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Popo-Licious In reply to RekiRyu [2012-09-22 16:29:15 +0000 UTC]

All you need to do is lock the layer, and then go over it with the gradient tool. :3 The base coloring, green shadows, and red highlights should all be on different layers. You'll want to use the grey layer lock, and not the black layer lock. If you have the green shadows on the the same layer as your base, then you won't be able to separate the shadows. >o<

RekiRyu In reply to Popo-Licious [2012-09-22 16:45:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh, okay, thank you, it took me some time to know how to lock the layer, because there are 2 grey locks
Really thank you, this was really usefull, I will probalby use it in my future drawings

Myriamu In reply to ??? [2012-09-22 15:29:46 +0000 UTC]

True in Sai I can't use the gradient for the shading. But for the lightenig part I can do it in a different layer, for exemple in my new layer I do the "light part" in a different color (like pink) to see exactly where I light and I can change the choice "addiction" to "lightening" in the layer's option (I don't know if it's the exact name because i use the french version of Sai haha ^^') aaaand It's done ! thank you very much Popo Congratulation on the DD !

Thank you! And I'm glad you're able to find a way to do this even though you can't use gradients. >w<

Could this method be executed in Paint Tool SAI as well?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Popo-Licious In reply to nyancat1997 [2012-09-22 14:18:42 +0000 UTC]

I don't use SAI, so I'm not sure. However, someone early stated that SAI doesn't have gradients. That really surprises me, but if it's true, then I suppose you wouldn't be able to use this. D:

ZakSaturday2468 In reply to nyancat1997 [2012-09-22 15:20:43 +0000 UTC]

one way to make gradients in SAI is to take your colors and list them from light to dark with a large pen tool, then use a fair sized blur tool (too big will mess it up) and blur each of the colors overlapping spots individually, giving a lovely gradient

EphemeralStar In reply to nyancat1997 [2012-09-22 14:38:35 +0000 UTC]

You can draw a pretty nice gradient on your own with the airbrush and water tools on a new layer, then put it as a clipping layer over your base color layer. This tutorial will definitely work with sai ^^

I love the technique and am looking forward to trying it out!

Maybe the tutorial could do with an extra step to show how you get from the second to last image to the last one. You've gone through and darkened it considerably in areas where the shadow is deeper like under her arm, which obviously makes sense but might not be clear to people trying to follow the tutorial and wondering why they're getting a quite different result.

Popo-Licious In reply to auen [2012-09-22 14:09:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for commenting! I include all that darkening and highlighting in my post-processing, and since I don't really have much of a science to it, I didn't mention it. >o< Thanks for pointing it out though! Maybe I'll make a post-processing tutorial at some point. XD

*sobs* I dont have a pretty gradient tool because i only have Sai and not Photoshop...

but, i like the idea of doing the shadows and highlights in a different color then going back and changing the color. It's smarticle.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Voiii In reply to EvilVampireDucky [2012-09-22 22:31:33 +0000 UTC]

You can get a pretty good gradient in Sai by using the water tool: [link]

I mean guess takes you more than 1 second to do but can still get you one that's pretty much as smooth as Photoshop's within a minute or two.

If you already knew that, then sorry~ XDD
