It's not much of a spoiler since it's a setup explained in the first 5 minutes of the movie: the Kaiju (giant monsters) attacking us come from a dimension rift in the lowest fault valley in the Pacific Ocean basin. So the places with the biggest Kaiju problems all border the Pacific Rim (west coast of North America, Japan, Australia, eastern coasts of Asia and Russia...)
