Description
History
Before Rex's family moved to the Johto region from a distant country, his family experienced an extended period of constant moving. Son to a pair of workaholic researchers, he had to both learn at home and learn to care for himself while fairly young. This gave him a sense of independence and drive to improve himself that he has valued since. This is not to say that he was neglected, just that his time with his parents often involved furthering his education rather than playing. His friendships during this period of his life were short-lived and infrequent due to the remoteness required by his parents' occupation.
After moving to Johto his parents settled in Olivine to refine their research there. Rex initially hated Olivine as it was the first time he was required to attend a public school. He had no trouble with the academic requirements of the courses, but he ran into some difficulty in that his grasp of the language commonly spoken was shaky at best. His inability to speak well, his shyness and meekness with other children, and his size, which at that age was a deal greater than most of his peers, made him a target for bullying. During this period Rex met two kids who would become his best friends in life and with whom he'd make contact several times; Jack and Regina. The pair became friends with Rex after assisting him with the bullies who were picking on him. The pair introduced him to the martial arts dojo where they attended and Rex began attending as well. Discovering an enjoyment for training his body as well as his mind. His new friends were further instrumental in his learning the language and getting along with others their age.
Years later, as Rex was preparing to enter high school, Jack and Regina decided to leave on a pokémon journey. They were unable to convince Rex to come along as he still remembered the effects the long period of moving around his parents had had as a child had and wanted to continue his education. Shortly after Jack and Regina left, Rex's parents began talking about going on another extended research trip. Rather than accompany them Rex asked to be enrolled into a private school in Kanto and was allowed to go. He would lose contact with Jack and Regina shortly after moving.
After high school Rex attended a university and attained a degree in half the required time and press on in his education with the intention of getting his doctorate in pokemon medicine. He financed his own education by part timing as a masseuse and instructor at the local branches of his chosen martial arts school whenever they had openings.
Shortly into his graduate work Rex accidentally ran into Jack. Like Regina he had only managed intermittent contact with the two over the years and they hadn't met in person since Jack had left. Hitting it off again, Jack contacted Regina who promised to come to see them, and they made plans to meet in the near future. In the meantime Jack regaled Rex with stories about his journey over the years and Rex showed him around the university and showed him some of the work they were doing. Jack stayed with Rex for two weeks before Regina arrived, again there was a joyful reunion and more stories to be told.
Finally, near the end of their visit, Rex announced that he intended to leave with them. Thoroughly, fed up by now with his stable studying environment Rex contacted his professors and made arrangements to finish his graduate degree as a Pokémon Researcher with emphasis on ecology.
The years following would see Rex on a whirlwind adventure with his friends as they moved across regions from gym to school to gym while Jack and Regina progressed with their training and Rex continued with his unusual study program. During this time Rex met many and captured trained several pokémon under the guidance of his friends, slowly rising to their level.
Near the end of his studies Rex had to go his seperate ways with his friends in Pewter City after the stress of pokémon training and his coursework threatened to overwhelm him. He attended a university in Pewter for his last year of schooling but near the three quarters mark found himself unable to focus on his studies, desiring to go out and see more of the world again. Devising a "senior research project" meant to keep Rex away from the university until Spring Break.
He set out to Mt. Moon to do his 'research' and intended to pass through to Cerulean City, and from there to further adventure until the end of Spring Break. At Mt. Moon he went through the motions of doing his experiments so he'd have something to show for his early break. His plans were disrupted after his joke experiment to equip a Zubat with a top hat, monocle, and drawn on little moustache, saw serious results as the other Zubat began to defer to the pokémon Rex called "Dapper Zubat." His chronicling the effects of the Zubat on the local colonies of bats took up the entirety of the time he'd set aside for research and he eventually had to return to the university in order to compile his findings. He missed spring break completely.
Rex received his doctorate and published his paper on "The Effects of Radical Appearance Change on the Social Structures of Zubat." Afterward he moved to Silver City where he established his "home base" from which he would make trips to various places for research, often alongside Jack, Regina, or both, and is where the pokémon he'd captured on his journey are housed. He was followed from Mt. Moon by the Dapper Zubat, who apparently had grown to like Rex but not enough to let him catch him. Dapper Zubat would follow Rex on several excursions. Since then he is rarely found at his 'home' and can be difficult to locate. When he is at home he is usually translating scientific articles and journals into other languages for friends and colleagues or turning his own research into scholarly articles for submission to journals.
In near the end of his first year as a researcher, and his 25th year of life , while on an impromptu exploration of a cave system in Mt. Silver a cave in caused to Rex to become in the cave. With the help of two pokémon from the area he was able to escape, at the cost of his right arm. The two pokémon that helped him joined his crew. He later recieved a helper Joltik from a colleague to help him with his loss.
Six months prior to present the trio of friends were on a discount ride aboard a cargo ship to the Hoenn region for an extended visit. During the trip complications from an unknown source caused the ship to begin to sink. The three friends were instrumental in the salvation of the crew but through circumstances only entirely known by Rex came out of the experience with both the pokémon Jack had with him and Jack was lost. Regina was unable to find out the circumstances as Rex forced her to escape on the last overfull lifeboat the crew had repaired by using his Joltik to incapacitate her. Rex tried to send both of Jack's pokémon with her but accidentally gave Regina only one. The circumstances around Rex's escape from the sinking ship are also known only to him.
Since the ship sank Rex has been moving nearly constantly. He has not returned to Mt. Silver and has made only cursory check-ins there. He has not contacted Regina or any of his colleagues for anything but to send in his research, and he has been moving from region to region unpredictably.
He arrived on Ohana a couple months early for Y2 and rented a small store space to run a restaurant out of in order to help cover expenses while living there.
PERSONALITY
Rex is a friendly and generally outgoing individual, and always has some treat or tidbit on his person for anyone he meets who wants one. He enjoys seeing new things meeting new people and having new experiences, to help this desire along he has spent some time while in his schooling learning other languages. He is a strong advocate of self improvement of both body and mind. He comes of as very nonchalant but has veins of seriousness that sometimes surprise people.
He has worked with and trained a wide variety of pokémon considering his newness to it but despite his gentleman-like appearance and gentle nature, psychic types occassionally become uneasy around him, unable to ignore a feeling that he's not present, or is stalking them from hiding that scares them. In addition his relationships with fighting types and bugs are abrasive and rarely seem to form strong bonds.
Those who know of his issues bug-types of this have questioned why he has carried things like a forretress on his team and has a joltik as a helper pokémon. In the Joltik's case at least he can respond that the pokémon in question has spent most of its time with him acting as his right hand, and it would be silly to be uncomfortable with one's hand, so he was forced to be at peace with it. Finally, he has never met a ghost type pokémon. Though not for lack of trying. On two occaisions he has attempted to visit the Ecruteak gym only to find it closed due to damage done to it in the night by the pokémon trained there. The pokémon themselves remained AWOL.
While laid back most of the time, trying to help him with something that he hasn't asked for help with is likely to be perceived as trying to help him cover for his lost arm and he may become snappish or angry. He is very aware of what he can and can't do and his Joltik and his team help him when he asks, if he doesn't ask you for help, don't offer.
His favorite thing to do remains cooking, as he learned it very young in life and has been developing his skill with it ever since. He maintains as much skill at massage and martial arts as he is able after losing his arm. The combination of these two skill sets has given him "magic fingers" that always seems to know where to rub, scratch, or just apply pressure in order make a body melt. They'd never admit it but it is to his teams' eternal chagrin that he only has one hand with which to work his magic. Some people he has worked on would agree. He also enjoys spending time outdoors at night enjoying the night sky, overcast weather, and exploring cave systems.
Warning: He gets huggy with people he is friendly and clearly enjoys closeness with people and pokémon who are dear to him.
POKéMON
Tidbit (Joltik Male): Tidbit is a specially trained therapy/helper pokémon that helps Rex manipulate objects and alleviates Rex's severe phantom limb pain. He does this by picking up the minute electrical impulses in Rex's shoulder to see what Rex wants to do with his hand and then attempts to do so either manually or using strings. Tidbit must be either on Rex's shoulder or attached to his shoulder through electrowebs to detect these impulses and in the presence of powerful electrical forces, generators, power transformers, very large electronics, and electric types fighting, Tidbit can be overwhelmed and lose track of the impulses due to the stronger inputs. He alleviates phantom limb pain by disrupting the signals before they reach Rex's brain. Again, Tidbit is specially trained for this and has no battle ability due to the finesse required for his job as a helper.
Duke (Rhyperior Male):
Item (if used): Metronome (worn on a belt)
Rex met Duke as a Rhydon while working in Mt. Silver five years prior to Y2. Duke is one of the two pokémon that helped Rex after the cave in that cost Rex his arm. He is aggressive and gruff with most people and pokemon but has a soft spot for those he views as weak or helpless.
- Duke is very serious and careful with everything he does, but is always willing to offer a hand to his friends.
- He is battle hardened and always ready for a fight but does not seek them out.
- Duke's fairly secure in his weaknesses as he is used to working with other pokemon to get past them and to help him compensate for them.
- Duke favors beating his opponents with the maximum amount of force in the largest doses he can administer. If he doesn't knock an opponent out in one shot, he'll just try even harder on the second.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HK Ritter (Magby Male):
Item (if used): Heat Rock (worn on neckband)
HK Ritter, sometimes HK or just Ritter, is a new pokemon to Rex's team. He is not very old yet but has a lot of potential. His sire is the Magmortar that evolved from the Magmar that helped Rex when he was in Mt. Silver. Rex is training HK as a favor to his father, even though he really didn't want to take on more pokmon.
- He is very serious about his training and his battling, feeling like he has some big shoes to fill with Duke and his sire having come before him. This sometimes makes him reckless.
- He has become a bit prideful after Rex has started letting him take part in battles properly. This gives Joan an easy way to needle him into a fight.
- HK's style relies on maneuverability and exploitation of a wide set of types to make up for the directness of his attacks. His family line offers him ridiculous power output but he tires quickly after attacking due to his age and low level of evolution.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Normandy (Melano Krookodile Male):
Item: Binding Band (black, worn on left arm)
Normandy is actually a pokémon belonging to Regina that was trained by Rex's care due to some shenanigans that were going to be ironed out after they arrived in Hoenn. Since Rex hasn't seen Regina since then he hasn't been able to return Normandy, and Normandy is in no hurry. He gets along with Rex, for reasons up to and including Rex's skill at giving scratches, but none of the other pokemon like him very much. Sheila is the exception thinking his "too cool for you guys" attitude is hilarious and will be excessively affectionate with him just to rile him up.
- Normandy is a bit cocky about his fighting styles, despite Rex's efforts to add in some variety he refuses to change up his strategy which is generally identifiable as cruel.
- He favors using Swagger to increase his opponents power while holding them in place and wearing them down with Sand Tomb. If his opponent closes the distance he switches to using Foul Play to punish his opponents for their supposed impudence. If his Anger Point is reached however he will switch to using Earthquake in a constant rage until either he's knocked out or his opponent is.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joan (Azurill Female):
Item (if used): Bright Powder
The newest member of Rex's lineup, Joan is in most ways still a baby, but she surrounded by all the strong looking pokémon in the group she's eager to prove herself against whoever she can, this usually comes in the form of Ritter, as he is easily riled up. Rex recieved her as an egg from one of the trainers he sponsored starting out that randomly ran into him and had heard about the boat incident. Rex tried to turn down the gifted egg but was unable to do so. Seeing as he might need a water type Rex has kept Joan around and trained her to try and make her evolve but so far has been unsuccessful.
- Joan is a little ball of energy with no outlet. Constantly attempting to be helpful she is sometimes at risk for becoming annoying.
- She favors using Double Team and getting in close on large enemies, which to her is all of them, and taking advantage of their inability to track her easily when she's at that range to hit them with their weakness. If the environment is right or the enemy is big enough she likes to use Bounce to get around them.
- Rex dislikes using Joan as despite her being more than old enough to fight he has trouble seeing her as anything but a baby. He'll only use her if he feels she's the only strategic choice or if he can use the chosen opponent as something to cut her teeth on with a low risk of injury.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vivian (Forretress Female):
Item: Light Clay (stored inside)
Vivian is one of the long time members of Rex's team and has typically served in a support role alongside other members of the team. Rex met her on his first journey with Jack and Regina and has frequently brought her on trips since. Vivian is very steady and reliable but not prone to putting herself into situations where she's not invited, or getting particularly excited when things happen around her.
- Vivian favors double battling as her partner can help her cover herself but can stand on her own with her sheer toughness and ability to outlast most pokémon.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sheila (Arcanine Female):
Item: Life Orb (On a collar, hidden beneath coat)
Belonging once to Rex's friend Jack, Shiela has ingratiated herself to Rex and refuses to be sent away to Regina or Jack's family and spends the most time out of her ball of any of Rex's team. She's the first pokémon Jack ever caught and is a fairly old Arcanine at this point, having been in the family for years. But age hasn't caught up to her yet and she doesn't intend to let it. She typically is the first to run herd on the HK Ritter and Joan as they remind her of her own pups she's had over the years. She responds to accusations of being the team "mom" by mercilessly making fun of, playing with, and teasing the one who said it. She doesn't mind the appelation, she just wants them to remember she's a kid at heart too.
- She favors a strong battle style that strikes hard and fast at opponents weaknesses giving no chance to retaliate. Always targeting the largest apparent threat first if given a choice.
- Her biggest weakness is that she has bad habit from having worked with one of Jack's other pokémon for so long she's come to expect she'll be backed up with ranged support.

*getting cameo info* "Man with poke-helper due to injury . . . Man of intellect, of SCIENCE . . . Gives out cookies. Casper and him should be the best of friends--"
*sees that psychic-types are uneasy around him*
*proceeds to cry for the friendship that could have been*
On a side note, Casper is one of those people who helps without people asking, so I don't think Rex and he would get along, regardless. XD;;;

Yeah... psychic types tend to not like the initial "nothing there" feeling when there's quite obviously someone standing right there. There are more effects but the first one is usually enough to put 'em off.
Rex doesn't mind people who help as long as they're not jumping in his way when he's clearly not having a problem.

*puts flowers out on the grave of their possible friendship* ;---; I love that reason, though. And, they have the same dislike towards bug- and dark-types.
Fair enough. XD

Bugs and fighting types he has a hard time getting along with, yeah... If his psychic can't abide Rex's presence then it wouldn't work ;-; Surprised that's the case though. Most service animals get trained pretty well to ignore incredibly distracting things in order to do their jobs. I imagine Pokemon would be much the same except easier seeing as they're smarter.

Vera's trained, yeah, but she's a bit young to be 100% okay with those super-effective types. She could stand Rex's presence; it's Casper I'm worried about. He's lost his psychic powers, but he's forever a psychic. > >; He can be quite immature about those things.

Wow this is really cool!
I haven't got time at the moment to read the full description, but the idea of this image is really awesome ~ I've never seen something done quite as well as this!! Did you make the template // layout for this yourself?
Will be coming back later for a full read ~ can't wait!!

Nah, man it's a standard form from the group thing I'm trying to submit and join. I just drew the stuff in it. I really hope I don't get in trouble for that stupidly long description. Or that I didn't screw up submitting it somehow.
Thanks for the comment

I think the long description is perfect - the more info the better, it just shows off how much time and effort you've really put into outlining this character so they really shouldn't give you into trouble for giving it so much, you know?
You're welcome
