Transgender flag overlaid over various other flags.
Transgender (often shortened to trans) is a term referring to people who do not identify as the gender assigned to them at birth . It commonly refers to men who were assigned female at birth (trans men), and women who were assigned male at birth (trans women), these examples being known as binary trans people. All non-binary people are also inherently included under the term trans, because their gender is not what was assigned to them at birth. Although, some non-binary people choose not to identify as trans.
Transgender is not a gender identity on its own, rather it is a gender modality , showing that there is a difference between one's assigned gender at birth and one's actual gender.
The opposite of transgender is cisgender .
Transneutral is a gender identity where one identifies with neutral or unaligned gendered feelings more so than other (masculine and/or feminine ) gendered feelings. They can be assigned male or female at birth. Transneutral people can also identify as other, non-neutral genders as well, though typically one's neutral identities are more significant that one's non-neutral identities. Transneutral people are sometimes called MtN/FtN or M2N/F2N (male/female to neutral) depending on one's assigned gender at birth.
Some transneutral people include:
- Non-binary people (who are not primarily masculine and/or feminine aligned)
- Agender people
- Deminonbinary people
- Neutrois people
- Stellarians
- Maveriques
- Genderfluid people who identify as neutral more often than masculine or feminine (such as eafluid ).
- Any other non-binary person who is neutral aligned or unaligned.
Transneutral is sometimes used, not as a gender identity, but as a way to describe anyone who undergoes a medical transition process that is not fully transmasculine or fully transfeminine- either through surgery, hormone replacement therapy, or other methods. Under this definition, people who undergo transition to attempt to appear more neutral would be considered transneutral, regardless of their actual gender identity.
The feminine equivalent to transneutral is transfeminine , and the masculine equivalent is transmasculine .
Assigned Male At Birth (AMAB) (also seen as Designated Male At Birth (DMAB) or Male Assigned At Birth (MAAB)) is an assigned gender for people who have external sex traits that were identified as male. It is used as a way to refer to the sex on one's birth certificate or to discuss medical issues that primarily face AMAB people without making assumptions about one's current sex, body, or gender.
When a person is born they are said to be male based on the presence of a penis, or a clitoris over a certain size. The presence of a vagina (the internal structure) is not checked. Some intersex people who were AMAB only discover they have a vagina once they are older. Chromosomes are also not checked, so a person who was AMAB doesn't necessarily have XY chromosomes.
