Altitude Sickness <-- Previous || Next --> Uncovered Aspirations

Icarus couldn't help but find it interesting that the climb that Demetri had been so insistent they take had downed him so easily. Icarus had looked on as his herd mates struggled to find their breath and hesitated to continue. But Saria took charge and with some help from the new mare, the rest of the unit was headed back down the slopes. Icarus felt strangely called to continue and with few words turned to do so. The following hours washed over the stallion in silence. The occasional mountain breeze whistled by but the golden stallion continued to climb ever higher. The nervous fluttering in his chest he had felt when they had first started to gain altitude had steadied into a rhythmic drumming that seemed to drive his steps.

The sky seemed to disappear as the path became shrouded with mist. Not once did his steps falter as he continued to climb ever higher. It was only when the heavy mist began to lift that the golden stallion snapped out of his pace. Was that...surely not...he could have sworn he smelled apples. They were a rare enough treat back down on earth but up here? How was that even possible? The stallion slowed as he took a turn off the pebble stern path and quickly realized he was once again walking on grass. His eyes flickered down as he noticed the thick and untouched carpet of greenery that seemed to wrap around the mountain.

He turned another bend and stuttered to a stop. His breath caught as his eyes landed on the forgotten place his vision had shown him. Apple trees spotted with golden fruit grew wild out of various crevices which explained the smell. But his eyes landed on the lichen and vines covered entrance he had briefly seen months ago. Sucking down a short breath he slowly continued forward as he examined the ruin.

It was a miracle it stood at all, perched so close to the edge of a drop off. It had not survived without harm however which was evident by the overgrown chunks of stone and toppled marble pillars. He had to wonder what it must have looked like in his hay day, what a glorious place it must have been. Icarus hesitated as he neared the pitch black entrance of the temple, ears perked forward was he listened to the wind whistle and hiss through the entrance.

As mystical as this place was, it wasn't so charming as to completely render the stallion free of his common sense. This place was decrepit and there was no telling what was lurking inside. He licked his lips, finding his mouth suddenly parched as he tried to swallow the lump in his throat. He...he knew he had to go in. Something was calling him there, calling him home but the logical part of his brain was just entirely too loud.

"I...I can peek in. No harm in that..." He whispered to himself, exhaling loudly to steady himself before inching forward. He tried to focus on the sweet scent of those apples to calm his nerves as he leaned his head inside. It may have been pitch black from the outside but after a beat his eyes adjusted to the dark. Inside, it was clear there had been one or several earth tremors over the years.

Stones scattered the floor which looked like it was also made of marble. Now cracked and in desperate need of a polish, he moved forward tentatively as he peered about. A small part of him worried that something might be living here. Could trolls make it up this high up? He couldn't remember but gods that was the last thing he needed to find right now. He gave his head a shake and focused on the cracked murals that had survived whatever had happened here.

He was reminded of what Saria and Demetri had spoke of, that their temples had also been decorated with the illustrations of great deeds. He was surprised to see that this place was a little more decorated than what they had described. In addition to the murals he soon laid eyes upon a large statue in the center of the main chamber. The horn had long since been broken off but most of the rearing unicorn was still in tact. What was most impressive about the statue however were the massive wings which were still in tact and filled most of the room. He had always heard rumors, stories even of unicorns who had been so blessed but it was something else entirely to see it.

He took a moment to stand in the shadow of this statue as his eyes washed over it. Light was filtering into the temple from small cracks in the ceiling which also grabbed Icarus' attention. Was this some sort of trickery or had the ancient architects somehow planned for that. His eyes washed over the statue again, regarding the fierce expression of the figure who had reared up and was kicking their front legs. Icarus couldn't help but smirk a little, thinking to himself how impressive it would be to, somehow, grow wings of his own. It would certainly put Demetri's pathetic little flower trick to shame. To leave the earth entirely...to be able to fly like the dragons?

He shelved the idea and hummed softly to himself as he moved past the statue. He paused as he eyed the stretch of hallway that opened up behind the statueΒ  and presented him with several options. He could seem six other hallways, three on each side that lead to unknown rooms. One entrance way had collapsed completely so he was hopeful that the mural he needed wasn't in there. With another sigh he chuckled to himself, ears flickering around in surprise as how the noise echoed around him so loudly.
"Welp...I guess I just go one by one.." He whispered to himself before striding forward once more. He just hoped this place was still stable enough not to collapse on his head.

Icarus finally makes it to his temple all on his own!! Hopefully our apprehensive lad finally unlocks his magic and makes it back to the herd. Primal on the other hand continues to try and background X'DD
