Description
I was seven years old the first time I went to the youth fair in Miami. As soon as I entered the fairground I saw the most amazing blue star balloon. It was the only one in the bunch, and my parents must have paid through the nose just so I could have it. I immediately fell in love with it: the most magical thing I'd ever touched. It clinged to my hair, it hugged me back when I embraced it, it buzzed on my fingers when I rubbed it on my shirt. It was amazing. When I went on a ride, I had to give it to mommy to hold onto. Every time I saw her I'd make sure the blue balloon was firmly in her grasp. I was even glad to get off the ride just so I could have my balloon back in my arms. I walked down the street and let it rise on the string, so pretty in the spinning lights. But when the night came, so did the wind. The saddest feeling that night was feeling my beautiful balloon fighting my grip, wanting to be with the wind. Wanting to be free. I pulled it down and held it back in my arms, but the electricity was gone.
The rain came down and daddy decided it was time to leave. I wrapped the string around my wrist and we ran through the parking lot to the car. The heavy rain passed and dad unlocked the doors so we could all get in. I pushed my balloon in the door and got in. But before daddy closed the door, the wind came in and pulled on my blue star. The string slipped off my wrist and was closed in the door. I raced to save it. I opened the door and grabbed the string, but it slipped out of my wet fingers and was free with the wind. Dad jumped for it, but it was too far out of his reach.
I was devastated. I almost felt betrayed. The balloon and the wind were together at last. All I could do was watch it fly away into the night sky. My dad told me to get in the car before the rain came back. My body shook while my blue star balloon left me. We drove away.
