Description Ridley is a very small monster who appears in the Metroid series.

Ridley in Smash
You might have heard some mumblings that Ridley is too big for Smash.
By that they means that he's too large to be a playable character. Sakurai has commented on the matter himself and confirmed that it's not just his size, but the fact that in every game in which he appears, Ridley is very large, very fast and very powerful and to strip him of any of these characteristics would not be true to his character.

I understand that some codemakers have rebutted this by putting together a playable Ridley model in the...Brawl engine? Yes, technically a playable Ridley could exist but I think to do so would require altering core elements of the game to accommodate it.
Stages would need to be bigger to prevent clipping into the scenery and the borders would need to be further out in response to Ridley's superior recovery, which would instantly put other characters at a disadvantage.

I had considered that maybe he could have smaller, ragged wings that are maybe battle damaged and reduce his mobility slightly but I'm not sure that's enough to make it viable. You might recall how Sakurai once said that there would never be an Animal Crossing character because it wouldn't suit the style of game but they managed that so if anybody can make it work, it's Nintendo, right?

However, if Ridley can only ever exist as a boss I'm happy enough that he gets that accolade, just as long as they don't use that ugly Other M model again and that maybe bosses get a bit more significance.

Ridley in the Metroid series
SPOILERS?
As I mentioned on Mother Brain, Metroid monsters aren't the kind of things that can keep coming back without explanation once destroyed.
Unfortunately that means that Ridley has a very messy lineage and has to appear at multiple Meta Ridleys, or Omega Ridley, or Plasma Ridley or Shadow Puppet Ridley, because he's a cool boos that people like and they want to keep bringing him back but that often manifests as him being shoehorned in somehow (Samus Returns being an excellent example of this) and because the games jump around through the timeline it's quite a challenge to figure out which Ridley came first.

So Ridley is sure to stick around in the series, I just hope he gets a little more solidified. I know it's less satisfying if he simply flies off instead of exploding when you beat him, but it does mean he doesn't need to have all sorts of prosthetics bolted to him next time you meet him.

You know, Ridley was about the only newcomer in Ultimate (barring DLC and a few Echoes) that really surprised me.

Inkling was pretty much guaranteed a spot with how successful Splatoon is.
I expected Simon to get in mostly due to Snake's return and since Capcom and Sega got multiple playable series.
My reaction to King K. Rool was pretty much "Oh...okay".
I was and still am extremely indifferent towards Isabelle's inclusion.
And Incineroar would've been a huge surprise if Charizard remained a standalone fighter (Decidueye was universally agreed to be the most likely Gen 7 rep until Pokémon Trainer came back, and there was the whole "Starter Trio" thingy).

And that's why Ultimate's base roster failed to really "wow" me.
When looking at the last installment Smash 4 had a lot of newcomers that made me go "Woah! I didn't expect that character to get in!", especially with Wii Fit Trainer and Duck Hunt.
Even the characters I did expect still had some unexpectedness to them, like with Pac-Man using his classic design instead of the unappealing Ghostly Adventures look and Bowser Jr. riding in a mini Koopa Clown Car.
Ultimate's roster, on the other hand, mostly made me go "Oh hey, that character got in. That's cool, I guess".
So yeah, I just found the base roster to be, although decent, very predictable compared to previous entries and...kinda boring.

The DLC roster so far does seem to be picking it up for me, though, so atleast there's that.

I know what you mean, I think I feel the same way for the most part.

I tend to think of characters as "classic" or not classic - I didn't think there were too many classic newcomers even in the last game, but there were in this game, even if a lot of people already expected them.

I only recently realised what the criteria was for what I consider a classic character: if the character existed before the first Smash game, I think of them as classic, so there are quite a lot of "new" characters in the series now.

I legitimately never considered size as a factor when it came to Ridley, either in Smash Bros., or even to his overall character.  It's only when people pointed out his size in comparison to Samus that I was like "oh yeah, I guess he is kind of big in the Metroid games", but even then, I never thought taking away that size would take away key aspects of his character, which to ME, is ferocity he employs when he fights as well as his cunning, which Sakurai already seemed to miss that point, since he's mostly portrayed as a mindless monster, particularly in the Wii U Smash Bros.  All-in-all, there is literally no excuse for why Ridley can't be in Super Smash Bros., at least without being contradictory or hypocritical with regards to who else Sakurai included.

Sure, you'd have to change him a bit to make him work better within Smash Bros., but then again, Sakurai had no problem making Ike a slow, powerful heavyweight, when he was the opposite in his core game (the speed part, at least, he was still quite powerful in addition to that), so I don't see why he'd draw the line with Ridley consider how many other characters in Smash Bros. are shells of their in-game selves or how many of them had stuff that was just made up for Smash Bros.

I think it would be a massive boon to them if they included Ridley in the next game.
After all the debate that one character has garnered, for them to reveal a playable Ridley would explode in the gaming communities and draw a huge amount of attention to the game.

I do recall the boss version of Ridley, so i can see both sides of the arguement for inclusion. Great work on the dino-like appearance of him here. Very good stuff, no matter what he becomes in the Smash series!

I do not think that his size is a viable argument. Kirby is canonically about 8 inches and Olimar is of a very small size as well which would mean that they would be too small to compete. So they were both sized up accordingly. They could just as easily shrink Ridley to maybe around Bowser's size and balance him out from there, I feel. As for his recovery, they might just give him a sucky one like Charizard has... I am not sure.

Right, but!
Kirby is 'canonically eight inches tall' but in proportion to the world he lives in, he's 'normal size.' Olimar is very small, but the games are seen from his perspective, so he is normal and everything else is huge.

The trouble with Ridley is that he is very large even in comparison to Samus, who is the main character. Making him smaller would make him small in comparison to Samus and that wouldn't be right.
And Ridley is almost always large. Bowser changes size so often in the Mario games that it's practically a signature technique, so they can make him a bit small and he still fits with Mario. I'm not sure that would work with Ridley.

Well, I do not think Ridley would be small in comparison to Samus specifically if he was shrunk down... As in, his in-game model would still be bigger than Samus's.  However, I see what you mean.
