Description Yes yes, I used to bat for the "Ridley Is Too Damn Big For Smash" team. Sure, they resized Bowser, but that guy is a different size in every game he's in and after the first Metroid Ridley has always been huge so I was going to use Metroid Prime (aka "Dark Samus") instead.
However, Ridley is much cooler and more important to the series and I reasoned with myself that this is all conjecture anyway and if I was making the next Smash Bros. game I'd say "To hell with it, we'll squeeze him in somehow."

As I see it Ridley would work if they scaled him down slightly so he's actually larger than even Bowser, but due to his wiry frame (and, presumably, hollow bones) lighter than most of the super heavyweights.

Plasma Breath: Ridley spits fast fireballs over a short radius directly in front of him which explode on contact.
Roar: With a mighty roar, Ridley's fierce breath will push players back and if they're close enough when he throws his head forward they'll take damage too.
Fierce Swoop: Not dissimilar to Metaknight's Shuttle Loop, this move is slower and has a larger radius (Ridley would probably follow Charizard by having three jumps and a glide.)
Skewer: For this move Ridley drives his sharp tail into the ground and recoils slightly. Not quite like the "bomb" moves, but can speed up your descent if in the air.
Lethal Drive: I've got no reference for these move names, really, but Ridley's Final Smash is taken from Super Metroid and performs almost identically like the Dragoon in Brawl (which may mean retiring it as an item) Using the aiming reticule Ridley will swoop through the screen (from behind the stage) taking out anybody in his way.

Crazy how we all thought this would never happen.

I just stumbled upon this, I remember when I first saw these during Smash 4's Fighter Ballot hype. I like the style you drew all your Smash moveset renders in, really dynamic. Your new stuff's really appealing too, I'm scrolling through your more recent Smash stuff right now.

That being said, how are you faring with the Smash Ultimate hype? I can't wait personally, I don't think I've ever anticipated a game this much.

Oh, thank you very much! I enjoy drawing Smash stuff and do think I'm getting better, I just need to do a better job at balancing it with my other projects!

Well of course I'm very much looking forward to the game. Luckily I'm pretty busy right now so I almost don't have time to look forward to it! I do think they made the right decision by announcing it so close to release. As much as I enjoyed keeping up with Brawl through the official website, it was kind of excruciating to get only a tiny piece of information every day for what? Two years?

Yeah, I remember beginning to follow Smash news after 4 was announced. It feels almost spoiling to hear all the news the same year the game comes out.
I mean, the anticipation is still killing me, but at least I know the wait will be worth it

Now let's compare some of the moves with the official one shall we? ;3

Plasma Breath is in fact his Final Smash, while the Neutral Special is fireball.

As for "Skewer", well... Tail Stab was in fact the down special, but from the side instead from the air ( and it's got 50%+ damage?! XD )

Nice moveset though!

So, professor. How do you feel about Ridley actually having made it in?

professorfandango In reply to Raikomaru [2018-06-23 14:42:25 +0000 UTC]

I'm very happy about it! I wasn't sure it would actually happen but I'm glad it did.

I just hope he's good. So far I've only seen mediocre performance from E3 footage, but I'll assume that's because he's brand new and nobody'shad the chance t get to grips with him yet.

And what do you think about it?

I sure don't mind he's in, and I'm eager to, when the game comes out, give him a try and see what he handles like.

I'm not gonna lie; I was on the "Ridley won't work in Smash" camp during the Smash 4 days too. People bring up Olimar and Bowser but what they're not seeing is that the problem isn't Ridely's size, but his proportions. If you shrink him down, his neck is gonna become ridiculously thin, and his tail will still be pretty long. It just doesn't seem like it's feasible; every fan mod I've seen just doesn't sell it to me. All that said, if he ever makes it into Smash, I'm fine with that. I'm not against him being in, I just can't really see him working well. And I think only Sakurai and the Smash team can pull it off.

So let's talk about his moves. Plasma Breath seems pretty good and much more useful than some other projectiles assuming it explodes when hitting the ground too. I'm guessing it's based on his fireball attack from his Meta Ridley fight in Smash, which is why I'm picturing it to be useful. Roar I see you ripped from his regular boss battle in Subspace, and yeah, a move with push-back but without being really janky like FLUDD sounds useful, although it doesn't terribly excite me honestly. Not keen on his Up Special being a Shuttle Loop clone; seems a bit weird to see such a large character pull such a tight circle. Obviously it has to be flight-based but I think it could be a little more unique. Skewer is definitely Ridley, although I can imagine it being his down aerial move rather than a special, although that wouldn't make you fall faster. Not a fan of a Dragoon-style Final Smash. Seems very plain and lame that it'd just be a copy of what an item can do. I haven't played many Metroid games, so I have no idea what to make his Final Smash, but I would definitely make it something else. Someone suggested a cinematic where he grabs the enemy and grinds them against the walls like what he did to Samus in Brawl and Other M. Maybe that would be a good choice. Although at the same time I'm not sure if Ridley should have a cinematic Final Smash.

So yeah, overall I think you've got a moveset that is very Ridley, although there's a couple of moves I would personally change. If he actually gets into next game, I'll be happy with his fans and likely impressed with how they pulled him off. Also I'd love to comment on the rest but the Direct is in about an hour and a half and I need to make a journal post before then. I don't think the rest of the characters I have yet to comment on will be revealed tonight anyway.

Hahah, and you were right! None of my other characters were revealed, but against all odds, Ridley was!

I got a little close a couple of times but otherwise my movset wasn't too accurate. I think he looks pretty cool though and I did think his smaller size looked weird at first but I think I'm used to it now.
I did a more recent picture of Ridley where I kind of echo your statements about scaling him down. I said that a character's size in comparison to another is what makes it weird. Bowser is a different size in every game you see him in and Olimar has never stood up to any of these other characters in his own games. Indeed, when a Bulborb appears in Smash it is enormous, making Olimar's size comparatively correct, and does so by suggesting that everybody else is also tiny.
But (apart from on the NES) Ridley has always been large in comparison to Samus, so it's seeing a small version of him next to her specifically that makes it look odd.

You know, I'm really glad I decided to comment on Ridley before the Smash Direct. Boy did I not expect that. Sakurai is unpredictable as ever.

Like I said before, Sakurai and his team was the only way I was gonna be convinced Ridley could work. I think they did a pretty good job. I do think it's still a bit awkward though; even at that size they still had to make him all curled up basically. Maybe they'll be able to pull it off better in a future game (yeah, I'm getting way ahead of myself there). Also I think he looks a bit too realistic/detailed compared to other fighters to the point that he really stands out visually. They would have been better off to tone it done a bit in that regard.

Yeah, the moveset turned out pretty different, although your neutral special was pretty close. I thought it was pretty cool how the implemented the wall grind as a special, as a floor grind. And darn is that impale special brutal. Funnily enough he did end up getting a cinematic Final Smash, but to be fair I wasn't banking on them changing most Final Smashes to be quick and simple. I do wonder what they would have ended up giving him had they decided to not go in that direction. Not gonna lie though, what we did get was pretty cool. Almost like an Injustice-style super move.

But yeah, I didn't think it would happen this Smash, especially after Sakurai's comments on Ridley in the Smash 4 days. Here's hoping someone else from this selection (or your second rally) makes it!

I've said a couple of times that it seemed a little weird at first but I got used to it quickly and it certain match-ups you can see that he still is pretty big!

Awesome, perhaps they could use  a reborn Ridley who don't matured to it's final size.
He had 3 forms (including the mature level) in Other M.

But, one could imagine that he would still have to keep growing up in the final level to become the giant beast which we know.

Still! We'll have to wait and see!

Raikomaru In reply to professorfandango [2016-11-12 19:17:10 +0000 UTC]

There is ONE thing from Other M we can use...and yes, it's me again, with another idea.

We could rework Fatal Drive a little bit: instead of being like the Dragoon, it goes like this: upon using that move, Ridley lets out a loud screech and zooms off into the distance. He leaves a crosshair for the player to aim, and a press of the button sens him hurtling out of the background. If he hits an enemy, he slams them into the foreground and into a columnal arena, wherein he grabs said foe and does what he did in Other M and Subspace Emmisary: grind the foe along the walls, and finish them off with a huge blast of fire to the face!

It works well as a move AND pays homage to one of the coolest things Ridley's ever done!

WELL, despite the fact that I own Other M (Got it free with my Wii U) I haven't actually got around to playing it yet!

But based on your description, it seems like a pretty darn good idea!

Everyone seems to neglect that Pikachu and Olimar have been blown up five times their original heights in Brawl. I think resizing Ridley wouldn't be a problem at all.

We don't forget that Pikachu and Olimar resized, we just don't bring them up because their proportions won't become weird when their sizes are changed.

I must admit I used to think similarly, a bit of a purist view that everything had to be canonically correct but nowadays I feel that it doesn't matter so much; It's a crossover game outside of official canons that barely remain consistent as it is. Let's just have fun with it!

MetroidDatabase [2011-10-13 15:59:05 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, but I still highly disagree Ridley would be a fair or appropriate fighter for a Smash game. Diminishing him so he can "fit" isn't just the only problem, you'd have to keep his tail curled upwards, and even then he'd still be the length of 2 Bowsers. His range would be insane. He'd be able to attack you from the other end of the screen. Shrinking him down is only an insult to the character. Just let him be a boss and leave it at that. Ridley's awesome, yes, but as a playable character, no. Dark Samus on the other hand...

professorfandango In reply to MetroidDatabase [2011-10-13 16:32:21 +0000 UTC]

Dark Samus on the other hand is a terrible character, but would work as a Smasher.

Certainly there are plenty of arguments for and against, but I rest easy knowing that if Nintendo, as professionals, decide he should be playable they'll find a way to make it work. But even then people will complain, such is the nature of things.

They severely resized Olimar, too. I think in reality he's about the size of a quarter.
I'd LOVE to have him in smash. I like the skewer move. Hehe. So like him.

Infernalbird [2011-10-12 21:33:58 +0000 UTC]

I don't think Ridley is a good candidate for for SSB, its not his size that makes me think that way. (Mind you Olimar is the size of a quarter, so by that logic Godzilla can be playable.) Its the fact I think Ridley would be OP. His position as a boss was perfect, but to be playable let alone another flying heavyweight just sounds a tad OP. o3o Then again, Metaknight.

professorfandango In reply to Infernalbird [2011-10-12 22:32:21 +0000 UTC]

I can see where you're coming from, but a character is only as powerful as his programming.
Word is that Sakurai balanced everyone in Brawl himself and is intending to have many more people do this job for the new game so I'd imagine it would be relatively safe.
Besides, Ridley doesn't have that many very special attacks, they're mostly standard melee fare, plus I guess he could work like a better version of Jigglypuff: really useful in the air but really handicapped on the ground, since he rarely fights there.

If they are I'd heavily consider turning them into an alternate set of character select pictures for people with modded Wiis. If not WELL it'd be considerably harder for me to do the necessary recolors.

"As I see it Ridley would work if they scaled him down slightly so he's actually larger than even Bowser, but due to his wiry frame (and, presumably, hollow bones) lighter than most of the super heavyweights."

This sounds incredibly shitty! Why make the biggest target in the game even easier to knock off the stage?

Maybe it'd work if you upped the speed of his moves, his priority, or his mobility, but - Remember Mewtwo, who was fairly large, rather lightweight, and incredibly slow? Remember how terrible he was? P: I don't think simply making him light is the way to go.

The art is of course brilliant, to the point where I have to go into your Smash theory to find something to criticize.

Well I never said he should be slow, I just felt there should be something a bit more different than large size = large weight; Certainly there are many more factors to a character that I hadn't considered.
However they would do it, I think there might be a chance for him, since he was apparently requested quite a lot for Brawl.
