Wewt! Finally, I've gotten around to posting one of the main characters of my webcomic.

This is ryan. He likes swords. Alot. Before i met him, he had practiced kendo for someodd years, so he's pretty skilled with a blade. He has a cool sword rack in his room with a boken, a few katanas and a longsword, all of which but one are broken. His pride and joy is a katana thats concieled in a walking stick and cost him a bundle. Despite his rough practice, it's still in nice condition and as sharp as it was the first day he got it. Trust me, it's sharp...his first time unsheathing it, he sliced his wrist clean open o.O

Anyway, I decided to skip the dynamic lighting bit for this one and went with a pretty simple one-source shadow set up. As I learned from my last mistake, i made sure to keep the paper clean when I scanned the original so as to skip unwanted hours in clean up. Unfortunately i discovered that I had drawn it a tad light, so i had to overlay it on it's self a few times using the multiply layer function.

Originally, It was just supposed to be a wide shot of ryan with his whole sword, and a vertical strip of some cherry blossum leaves behind him, over a black background. after i took a second to look at it, i noticed that there was just way too much dead space. So I tossed in something that could add to the tranquility i was trying to contrast with his bodily tension, thusly the sunflower field. I thought that with all the detail and bright color in the field and blossums, it might take the attention from Ryan. So I airbrushed the field, not so much that you couldnt tell what it was, and threw a little glow on the blossums, not so much that they steal all the attention, but not so little that it doesnt highlight him.

Also... before any kendo practitioners have my head with this... that is not, by any means, a traditional kendo stance. However, Ryan is my editor, as well as a friend and a main character, so i wanted to make sure i threw in a splash of 'awesome'. Sometimes it's good to suck up.
