Shriekers are giant masses of fungus that need a lot of aether to grow. They can often only be found inside caves, unless a oblivious animal happens to die nearby: in this case, it is possible that fungus start to grow on the corpse until it becomes a "shriekling", a fungus using a host corpse as a means of mobility.
