Description

Just decided to whip up a quick ref for my gryphon OC Pysgod. He was originally in a batch of other Aquatic Gryphons meant to be sold as my first adopts, but I grew attached to them and decided to keep them. He's a cross between an African Penguin and a Dusky Dolphin. I was exploring the limit of gryphons, using only the "bird head + mammal body" as a boundary. I drew this myself, with the help of a few reference photos. In an attempt to jazz up his desgin, I gave him a Guardians of Ga'hoole-esque helmet, and a harness for holding things and allowing humans to ride on his back. The harness was based of the harnesses Navy-trained dolphins wear. I thought that was kinda cool. The dolphins are trained to find underwater mines. The battle helmet is just dress-up. Anyway, his name comes from the Welsh word for fish, and his last name is the name of his entire clan/pod/colony.

Full name: Pysgod Bahari
Pronunciation: Pies-god (that's how I say it)
Nickname(s) or Alias: Py
Gender: Male
Species: Aquatic Gryphon (African Penguin / Dusky Dolphin
Age: 5 years (basing his aging on that of a dolphin)
Current residence: In the Ocean around the southern-most tip of Africa.

Pysgod is one of the youngsters in his pod, and is very playful, like most other Aquatic Gryphons. His father is the alpha male of the pod, and he has a younger sister named Palesa. Pysgod befriends a boy named Noah Ashahavey who's on a quest to document all the world's gryphon species, and he fits him with a harness that allows Noah to swim with him (being a weak swimmer). The rest of the pod rejects Pysgod's claims that humans are good and the harness is nothing to be afraid of, saying that many of their kind have been killed an eaten by the humans. Often times they were killed for no reason, to preserve society's belief that such animals like gryphons don't exsist. Figuring Noah was a bad influence on his son and preventing him from becoming his rightful heir, Pysgod's father launched an attack on Noah while he was in a small boat studying seabirds. However, Pysgod swam in and saved Noah from drowning, and the pod elders pronounced him a traitor. From then on, Pysgod travelled with Noah all along the coast, introducing him to many new kinds of aquatic gryphons. He also accompanied Noah on his trip to Madagascar, where they parted ways once Noah reached shore.

Noah Ashahavey is a character from my WIP story The Gryphon Diaries. (Creative title, eh? Well, could be worse. The original working title was The Gryphon Whisperer.) I imagine Noah as looking a lot like that kid from the Neverending Story.. Can't remember his name.
