Interesting poignant image - doubly interesting because of the techniques you're using (and mixing). There's a litho quality to this image as well, which is not surprising, given the gum arabic stage, and the 'washing away'. You hold an image like this and you feel the craftsmanship that went into it. Sometimes, when I hold a high-gloss image, I feel like I am holding a piece of plastic that came out of a machine. There are - as you so obviously realize - sometimes more aesthetic qualities to a photograph... than just the image itself.

I agree, many photographers limit themselves too greatly in the scope of their expression. Choice of media can be a symptom of this phenomena.

interesting way of framing the focus it certianly is vivid, but under the upperchair is hardly visible i don't know enough about photography to make suggestions on how to bring it out without loosing over effect.

Thanks.

I think it could be done- less exposure in the gum stage probably, but I think you see more in the print than the scan anyway.

it looks pretty wild as a scan. but it certainly looks like a good use of all those chemicals

Thanks. I may try to play with color harmonies and these processes.

very interesting...don't understand exactly what you did to it. Not familiar with those terms.

Thanks. It looks better in person I think.

About the terms: Here comes a bunch of photogeek jargon...

Gum Dichromate is gum arabic + potassium(if I remember correctly) dichromate. UV light passing through the 8x10 kodalith negative causes the dichromate part to harden the gum arabic (which had black pigment in it as well), leaving an image after washing.

*pushes geeky glasses back into place*

This image did not have sufficient contrast, because my negative was not dense enough, so I decided to use the cyanotype process over it. Cyanotype is a chemical mixture (i'll spare you the details here) that turns a deep blue when exposed to UV light. So, being a high-contrast process (and due to my reducing the exposure by a third), the cyanotype layer brought out the details in the shadow area that were altogether lacking in the gum layer. I'm really starting to enjoy Alternative processes because of possibilities like this.

Sorry, I couldn't resist...

even though you told me the process, I still don't understand. I'm a hands-on kind of person. I'd have to do it for myself to fully understand it. I'm glad you are liking your class, cuz I knew you weren't thrilled about it at the beginning. (seeing how someone you don't like is in the class)

like the geek pushing up glasses part...nice touch.

yes, and surprisingly she hasn't dropped it yet...

I feel like I should really wear glasses, they just fit my personality profile.
