Description
Again, my version of the S.I.R. from Max Brooks' "World War Z." In this, I have added the folding bayonet and an after market cheek rest to my sniper varient.I have been thinking long about the round described as the "Cherry" PIE. I decided it was a slightly thicker jacketed ballistic tip round, similar in length to a 68 gr Sierra Match, and filled with rubidium. This would create the described red flash behind the eyes. Add to the fact that rubidium is something like the 16th most abundant element on earth and has next to no radioactive properties, the only challenge is sealing the round against water. Easy enough as Russian ammo makers have been doing that for decades. Given that rubidium has aprox 16% the density of lead, your normally 68 grain round would, with a thicker jacket, weigh closer to 35-40 grains. Looks like the 1:9 twist rate would be the best.

In the book, their "square formations" are normally open field combat operations, and not urban warfare. On another note, consider that the military doesn't always issue weapons that make sense for the conditions on the ground. When I was deployed as a Marine in Al Anbar province, we were issued M16A4 rifles with fixed buttstocks as opposed to the M4 carbine with an adjustable stock. They told us to just "short stock" the weapon (as in pull the butt out of your shoulder and stick it behind you) to lower the profile of the weapon around corners in buildings. We were also issued ACOG optics with no option for not using the magnification. I was clearing houses with a rifle that was configured (beautifully I might at) to engage an enemy at 600 yards. Hence why military intelligence is an oxymoron.

feels too much like a more sniper-based gun than a close action gun meant for urban warfare

I also redesigned the charging handle to fix the gap in my previous submition. There is no more mechanical swinging cover to serve as a dust cover; no need for it. I made the charging handle a right side non-reciprocating device.
As a final addition, I threaded the sniper variants barrel and added an A2 flash hider. This makes it compatible with any suppressive device. These two rifles are shown with 30 round magazines (I prefer the lower profile 20 round magazines for the sniper).
