Description
Full name: Jemima Elizabeth Cartwright (Goes by Jem)Birthday: June 18, 2033
Age: 23
Height: 5'10" (to give you an idea of how tall that is, according to the info on part of TZ's website, Zdunich is 6'0" and Jem's 2 inches shorter than Graves; if there's 12 inches in a foot, and he's 6-foot, then take away two of those inches, and you've got Jem)
Hair: Medium auburn (can lean towards the darker end of the spectrum in certain lighting)
Eyes: Dark brown with hints of a lighter shade that leans sort of towards amberish
Scars, Birthmarks, Etc: Had to have stitches on her left shoulder at one point due to an injury, and the scar is faintly visible, usually covered by clothes, but either way, not very noticeable unless you know it's there and just where to look for it; also another scar on her upper thigh from a minor surgery she had to have after being injured in a crash
Family: Terrance "Graverobber" Zatovich (godbrother); Summer Zatovich (godmother, deceased); Andrew Zatovich (godfather, deceased); Natalie Zatovich (godsister, location unknown, possibly deceased); Joseph Cartwright (cousin, drag queen, goes by Zenaydia or just Zena); Micheal Cartwright (father, deceased); Heather Cartwright (mother, deceased)
Background: Jemima was barely a year old when her aunt and uncle were killed in a hit-and-run, leaving her cousin Joseph an orphan. Joseph came to live with Jem and her parents, and at about the same time, her parents decided to make her father's best friend and his wife Jem's godparents. (They had already been named the godparents of Andrew and Summer's daughter Natalie by this point.) About two years later, Andrew and Summer had another baby, a boy who they named Terrance, and who later decided he liked his middle name, Allan, better, but Jem decided she wanted to mess with him, so she just kept on using his first name.
When she was about twelve, Andrew died of liver failure, and a few years later, Summer had a heart attack. Not long after her death, Jem's own parents were killed in a car crash, and the children of both families (which now also included Natalie and Terrance's older half-brother Nicholas) ended up scattering and going their own separate ways, with Natalie, who was the oldest of the five, disappearing shortly after their parents' funerals, leading the other four to eventually come to the conclusion she somehow found a way off Sanitarium Island.
As for the rest of them, Joseph, having come out as gay a few years prior and re-naming himself Zenaydia, went off alone for some time, and was frequently seen hanging around Sanitarium Square for the next few years or so, at some point during which he started wearing drag, sometimes preferring to be addressed as a male, other times as a female; Nick, who was a year younger than Jem and a year older than Terrance, began bouncing around from job to job, never able to keep interest in a single one for very long because of his ADHD; 13-year-old Terrance sort of just disappeared into the back alleys for a while, and Jem didn't see him again until he was about 15, around the same time that a 19-year-old female graverobber with pink hair called Dixie took him under her wing and began teaching him her trade, eventually earning him the nickname Graverobber; Jem herself was able to survive as a street actress for a while, having inherited her mother's talent and passion for the stage.
These days, Jem can be found living in a small apartment with Zena in a neighborhood more on the outskirts of the city with much less people wandering the streets. It's a bit more run down and dilapidated than the central part of the city that her godbrother frequents nowadays with his tiny little creature of a girlfriend, close enough to the harbor that under just the right circumstances, the crashing waves can sometimes be heard when the bedroom window is open, and with Nick always bouncing between jobs, he tends to alternate between staying with Terrance and Shilo and crashing on the couch at Jem and Zena's place.
Hobbies, Interests, Talents, Etc: Jem has always been a gifted actress, and has also been said to have a lovely singing voice, though she's often been known to say that this is debatable when it's brought up. Some of her favorite works include Romeo & Juliet, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Crucible, and Running in the Red. She is also a fan of Giacomo Puccini's opera La Boheme, and has a habit of putting on Musetta's Waltz to let it play throughout the apartment while she dances around to it. She's also a fan of a few Rodgers & Hammerstein works, as well as a few other musicals and composers from before the organ failure epidemic, including Phantom of the Opera and Cats, and Into the Woods. She loves all sorts of poetry, and like a favorite monologue, she can quote and recite several works by heart.
Personality & Temperament: Jem is generally a very sweet girl with a beautiful smile, pretty laugh, and kind heart. The only surgeries she's ever had were to get stitches on an injury on her shoulder, which she doesn't count as an actual surgery since it didn't even require any Zydrate, and one on her upper thigh after sustaining an injury in the car crash that killed her parents, but she's never had an organ or anything else replaced, so she's not in any danger of repossession. She doesn't really have a problem with her younger godbrother's illegal activities, because she believes that he should make his own choices without her or anyone else trying to control what he does or doesn't do with his life, and she and Zena are always willing to let him and Shilo stay with them if, for example, going back to their own place would mean risking the GeneCops showing up and arresting them.
The biggest concern she has about him doing what he does is his safety, especially given the fact that ever since they were kids, he's always been the type of person who can sometimes be too sassy and sarcastic for his own good (though she tries not to say this out loud if she can avoid it, because she's the first to admit that making such accusations would make her a hypocrite since she's much the same way). When he showed up banging on the apartment door at the "asscrack of dawn" one day accompanied by Dixie and a small, pale little thing of a girl and introduced the latter of the two as his girlfriend Shilo, Jem accepted the younger girl into the group of people she calls her family right away, and ever since, has treated Shilo with much of the same love/hate sibling sort of thing she treats Terrance with, but with not quite as much of the "hate" aspect as there is with him. All in all, she is the type of person that pretty much anyone would want to have on their side no matter what the situation, and she is one of the few people who remain not only unaddicted to Zydrate or the knife, but who also still have hope that the world's current condition can one day be improved if the right people and opportunity come along, which she believes they one day will, even if not until after this lifetime.
RANDOM BONUS FACT: If the conversation allows it, Jem will occasionally quote G.K. Chesteron's "Heretics" with the statement, "Hope is the power of being cheerful in circumstances which we know to be desperate," and if Graverobber is present, being the somewhat pessimistic guy that we all know and love, he will more often than not reply to this with the words of Friedrich Nietzche by telling her, "In reality, hope is the worst of all evils, because it prolongs the torments of man."
