About Pullip
Pullip is a Korean fashion doll made by Cheongsam Cheonha in 2003 and marketed by Groove (in the past, it was formerly marketed by Jun Planning).
Pullip has an oversized head and an articulated hard plastic body. She has eye mechanism that allows her eyes to be moved from side to side and wink. Since her introduction, more members of the Pullip family have been added such as Namu, Taeyang, Dal, Byul, Isul, and more recently, an unexpected addition, Yeolume. There are other members of the Pullip who have yet to be introduced; they are Ggot (Pullip's friend) and Bada (Taeyang's friend).

Pullip 풀잎 - leaf
Pullip was introduced in 2003; the first Pullip was Moon, released in July 2003. She was followed by Wind and Street, who were also released that same month.
Pullips have four different body types, depending on the year they were released. Pullip is roughly 12" tall. According to her profile on Pullip.net, she is a 17-year old high schooler. She refuses to be ordinary and seeks to be different from everyone else with her own style. Her little brother is Isul.

Body Types
Type 1
Dolls released between 2003 and 2004 (From Moon to Withered) have a Type 1 body, with visible screws and necks that snap easily. Type 1 Pullips are also the only dolls to have rooted hair; every doll made after have wigs.

Type 2
In 2004, the Type 2 body was introduced with the release of Venus, which fixed the problems that the Type 1 had. Type 2 had no visible screws and a soft torso; it had a very realistic and proportionate shape. Though the body was very posable, it had its disadvantages such as melting, staining on the torso from dark fabrics, the "tummy pop" where the torso would come out of the hip joint, and the limbs would pop out easily. Pullips from 2004 to 2005 (Venus to Paja) have this body.

Type 3
The Type 2 body was eventually succeeded by the Type 3 body and its debut with the releases of Lan Ai and Lan Ake in 2005. The Type 3 is the most sturdiest of the bodies, however, it has the most limited poseability. A common problem with the Type 3 bodies is wrist cracking, however, the problem first started with dolls made after January 2007 (after Haute LA).
Also, Pullips made in 2008 are able to keep their eyes closed (with Rei and Asuka being the first), though Taeyangs were able to close their eyes before then (HasH was the first). Also, Rei and Asuka were the first Pullips to have the new head mold. Instead of having a scalp (making three pieces), like the older Pullips, the new head mold now comes in two pieces (face plate and back plate).

Type 4
The Type 4 body made its debut in 2009 with the release of Neo Noir. The Type 4 body is much sturdier than its Type 3 predecessor, eliminating the moveable waist line that was in Type 3. It is much more poseable than the Type 3, but not as poseable as Obitsu or Volks. The hands are both moveable and detachable. Unfortunately, these pieces can easily be detached or lost.

Namu 나무 - tree
Pullip's ex-boyfriend. Namu was released from February 2004 to May 2005 (Vispo to Happy Birthday Couple Set). He, like Pullip, was also able to move his eyes and wink. He is roughly 13" tall (34 cm). There were only seven releases before he was retired under the story that he and Pullip broke up.

Taeyang 태양 - sun
Pullip's current boyfriend. In 2006, Taeyang MJ was released. Taeyang has the same body as Namu and is a little over 13" tall (34 cm). HasH was the first Taeyang to have his eyes stay closed. A common problem with Taeyang bodies is that the foot or hands can snap easily if handled roughly (like when removing shoes). He is profiled as the older brother of Dal.

Dal 달 - moon
Taeyang's little sister. Dal debuted in 2006 with the release of DRta. She has a smaller body, which is similar in appearance to a Type 3. Her body is just as articulated as Pullip. Her eyes can move from side to side, but they do not close.

Byul 별 - star
Dal's classmate. Byul was introduced in 2008; Byul Eris being the first. She has the same body as Dal but a different face mold. Like Dal, she can move her eyes, but they do not close.

Isul 이슬 - dew
Pullip's little brother. Isul was released in 2011. Isul Apollo was the first Isul making his entrance in the steampunk collection. He is 11" tall (29.5 cm).

Yeolume 여루메 - fruit
Pullip's future daughter. Yeolume was released February 2013 and was designed by Ars Gratia Artis, a designer for many Pullip models. Her body is very different from her counterparts, as she has no joints and is not as poseable as Pullip. In spite of her body, she is able to bend her arms and legs and sit. Her eyes can move from side to side but cannot close.

Little Dolls
The little dolls consist of Little Pullip, Little Dal, and Docolla Taeyangs and Pullips. They can be original characters or smaller versions of their bigger counterparts. They are 4" tall (10 cm) and are not poseable. They cannot move their eyes, and their eyes cannot close.

Buying Pullip
There are lot of places you can buy Pullips. The cheapest seller of Pullips is Pullip Style , and I highly recommend them for good service, lots of variety, and fast/cheap shipping. They will match any seller's price in the United States, and shipping is very inexpensive. Another good shop to buy from is the Doll Market , who will match Pullip Style's price if you go to their shop in person. Here is a list of other Pullip sellers you might want to check out:

Shifty Lizard
Dolly Market for used dolls, doll splits, clothes, accessories, pretty much everything!
Pullip Sales for used dolls, clothes, accessories, etc.

All of the Pullip family dolls are fully customizable. Their wigs, eyes, bodies, and face-ups are able to be changed. You can either customize yourself or pay someone to customize for you.

For Little Pullip/Little Dal/Little Taeyang
Usually, their eyes are replaced with eye globes, which are put in place with eye globe putty meant for that purpose.
Eye globe size: 10 mm (oval shaped)

Supplies
Do not ruin your doll! DO NOT use acetone nail polish remover or any acetone based products to remove a face-up! It will end up discoloring or melting the plastic on your doll's face.

What not to use:
acetone nail polish remover
acetone based products
heat - do not put your dolls in the oven. Heat will shrink your doll's head.
markers (Sharpie, Prismacolor, any kind of markers) will bleed into plastic, and it's nearly impossible to get out
oil based stuff like make-ups, cosmetics, pastels, paints; these can seep into plastic, and can damage the plastic if left on for a long period of time.
glue - Do not use Super Glue on a doll; it will melt the plastic. Do not use hot glue guns. I usually use a water-based glue like Elmer's Glue.
tape
Mighty Putty

What to use:
Fine grit sandpaper (400-1000 grit) and/or rubbing alcohol
Flat drying acrylic airbrush paints
Pastels (non oil-based) Prismacolor is a good brand to use.
Colored pencils
Watercolor pencils
Non oil-based make-up
Paintbrush
Sealant (Mr. Super Clear, Delta Ceramcoat, Testor's Dullcote)

Replacing Pullip Bodies
If you want more poseability, for your dolls, getting a new body is the best way to do it. There are two body types that Pullip bodies are commonly replaced with: Obitsu and Volks. Both body types come in different bust sizes--keep in mind that a larger bust size also means fairly tight fitting clothing.
Before you buy, you should check out the Pullip Body Match Guide . This guide isn't up to date, but has all the Pullips up until Pullip Dorothy.

Very helpful guide! But I am wondering, when you buy a Dal is it a wig that is on them already? Or is it rooted in the Dal's head.

I love your guide! Thank you for posting all of this information. I do have a question if you don't mind? We are in the process of customizing our Elizabeth doll into Glados from Portal. She needs thewhite part of her eyeglobes to be black. Could you please suggest the best paint and should we prime and seal? I hope to hear from you, but if not, thanks again for all this very useful info!

Very useful, thanks! Helped me decide my first Pullip- chose a Taeyang Tantus from 2008. I was quite reluctant as I have heard many things about wrists cracking and feet breaking off, but because I know about the other body types, he seems perfect now
