Ah, happy thoughts that cannot shed,
Such luxury, wealth can afford.
Tho by proxy it does fret,
Like serpent in basket sent.
I reckon 'pon many a year or so, not for long.
This too shall fade as if near oblivion.
Aye, with succulent lips it does beckon.
Closer, a plea, a message. Still unwritten.
Lost forlorn 'pon highest of noon, and lowest of morn.
Ah, happy thoughts, birthed from barren womb and woman scorn.

For some reason this poem brings to mind a song from "Everlast" titled What It's Like. I really can't explain why. It is ver eloquently written and thought provoking! It actually almost makes me sad!

I haven't heard or thought of that fine song in a while. It's back in my ears now, thanks to your comment.ย โคย

I'm also in agreement with you. Now if only I could come up with a response of my own to the poem!

"The by proxy"? What do you mean?

The last line, granted, is something which reminded me of Milton, but the rest is just... metaphorical, truth be told. I will admit that I thought of it as happy thoughts being described and how they can always take on various forms and features, and so they are dependent on the situation per se. Well thought out though. Good stuff

Incidentally, what does it mean? I might write something based on this poem... I think...

Proxy:

a. One appointed or authorized to act for another, especially a person appointed to vote as one wishes at a meeting.

b. The authority to act for another.

c. The written authorization to act in place of another.

As you know, I hardly ever truly explain my poems, as I feel it takes away from the power and mystique.
The fact it can be interpreted in multiple ways is one of the strengths of poetry, and defining it in one way would simply be an injustice.
But as you've stated, in a way it's both happiness and sorrow, pain, love, each delicately contrasting, through the sheer evolution of time.
A lover's broken heart, a miscarriage, the end of a relationship, and the list goes on.

Lovely! Interesting combination of style and content.

Somehow it makes me think of Keats (probably because of 'Ode to a Nightingale') - there are some resemblances with the romantics in the style. The content is more รก la Milton, though; same kind of edge, with poison served as nectar.ย

Coincidentally, Keats is one of my all time favourite poets.

I like him too - maybe a bit strange, since I'm not particularly into romanticism (except Lord Tennyson).

I'm unfamiliar with Tennyson, any poem in particular that stuck with you?

'The Charge of the Light Brigade' - you probably know it when you see it.
