Description I am.. SO LATE on finishing and submitting this picture!!

This was supposed to be the second part to the first-prize back when I had my fairy tale contest. The first part was a 3 month subscription to dA, the second part being a full color picture of the winner's choice.

For -- who asked for a picture of MY favorite fairy tale. The Little Mermaid (most any version will work) has been one of my favorite stories since I was a kid. I avoided the traditional tail color of green and went with something inspired by my (late) beta fish, Merlin.

The background took the most time- this was almost entirely done in SAI, save for the grainy texture of the sand, which was done in Ps Elements.

...also...I can still not color water very well.

Haaaair <3 I've always kind of wanted to have long pretty red hair. But I know it would just be a giant snarled evil beast if I tried. XD; You have a very different take on the tail, I like it. Definitely reminds me of a beta or even maybe an Asian dragon a little bit.

I've always wanted red hair, too. It's probably why most every time I've dyed it, it's been shades of red. (Shame, the color fades so quickly unless it is constantly touched up on D: )
I'm guessing you don't have much luck with long hair? (Then again, I'm not sure I've ever seen you with hair that was very long...it's usually always been pretty short o.o)

I really wanted to add more ...fin-age to the tail, and was going to add a dorsal somewhere, but I kind of effed up the perspective However, I might try a mermaid piece again and see what comes of it.

I used to have super long hair, and it was a nightmare. It would never have looked like your mermaid's hair no matter what I did to it. XD;

My hair used to be really long, too. (to some it's still long, but I consider it medium length compared to what it used to be xD)

I eventually got 18 inches of it cut off because it was too thick. Tangles happened WAY too much. I've tried to keep it at a more manageable length. Though I did discover that when it's a certain length with layers, I apparently have some curls. It's really strange. o.o The weight of my hair must keep it only a bit wavy. Nevertheless, it was a kind of nice surprise. xD

Mine was just one large tangle all the time since it's always really wavy. XD And I'd put it up in a bun after showing since I didn't know what else to do with it and it NEVER DRIED. Did that happen to you too? XD Sometimes I miss it until I remember that part.

Ahh yes. If I put my hair up right away after showering, it wouldn't dry, either.
Especially if I put it into a bun XD I'd take it down at the end of the day, and it'd still be pretty damp lol

The landscape in the background looks wonderful. Nice work on that. Coloring for the entire pic is also good.

The shortfall here is the perspective of the mermaid. Her tail is too far from her that it seems like a separate entity. Maybe you could reduce the amount of tail that is above water. Since she's resting on the shore, you could let part of her tail be partially submerged in the water while the tips may above water.

You know it's funny you say that-- right after I posted the picture, I spent a couple minutes looking at it and realized the same thing you just said. D: I'm not sure how I'll fix it, but I'm going to try. I sat and thought "Jeez, maybe I should've brought the tail a liiiittle closer to the shore- it looks like her body is growing out of the sand." LOL

Thank you much- the coloring was fun-- now I just have to fix the tail

Actually, the whole angle is a little off balance. I always imagine pics based on camera angles. If we can see her entire front, it means the camera is right in front of her. In this case, everything else has fall behind her. You will only see part of her tail, not the whole thing.

I'm not sure how you can fix this. Maybe just leave it as it is and try again next time. Feel free to note me anytime you need help, k?
