Description

A light frost covered the morning ground. The air had a slight nip to it, but inside his house Alex was warm and bundled under a blanket. He had just gotten off the phone with his boss. Alex had stopped working for his mother a year ago and since then; he and Bre had been talking about moving. Their only problem was finding a place close to a stable so they could move their horses. Now Alex’s boss had asked Alex to come work at company headquarters and not just over the computer. This was now or never, because if he didn’t move Alex could lose his job. He got up and walked into the room across the hall. He poked Bre a few times until she stirred.

    “What?” she growled.

“Get up, we have to talk.”

She opened her eyes and lifted her head, “About what?”

He sat at the side of the bed and Bre sat up and curled next to him, “My boss called, and we have to move out to California or I’ll loss my job.”

Bre paused a second, “So suddenly?”

“No, we have a few weeks before he wants my answer.”

“Well, what are you going to do?”

Alex sighed, “Well, I’m going to have to go. It’s a good job. You can stay here, but I think the offer is long term, and I won’t be coming back soon.”

“Were going together, and besides I’ve always wanted a tan.” Bre said trying to lighten the mood.

Alex cracked a smile that quickly faded, “What about the horses though?”

Bre got up and went into Alex’s study with him following. She got onto the computer, “Look” She pointed to the screen, “There is a stable around the area. Rally’s fine with travel.” She stopped for a second and Alex said what she was thinking.

    “But, Montgomery’s not.”

“What are you going to do about him?”

“I’ll have to let Ben finish his training.”

Where is my human? Montgomery though annoyed. He was hungry and it was breakfast time. He neighed loudly until Alex’s brown hair was in his view. Montgomery pranced at the gate, while Alex filled his dish while grain.

“Hey, bud!” Alex said tossing in the hay.

Montgomery let out a soft nicker and backed up as the gate was opened. Alex set the grain down, and Montgomery eagerly started eating. Alex stroked Montgomery’s yellow neck and continued to talk to him. Montgomery couldn’t understand, but he got the feeling that something big was going to happen.

It was the day of departure; Alex was sitting on the railing of Montgomery’s fence saying his goodbyes. Bre had loaded up Rally and was waiting in the truck. Alex and Montgomery were just staring at each other. Neither one moved for what seemed like forever. Taking one last look around Alex hopped off the fence and walked to the truck. He waved back to Montgomery as he got in the driver’s side.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montgomery still missed Alex, but he liked the new ginger-headed human. Ben even let Montgomery go out in a pasture was Diablo and Red. He got along with Diablo the best. Red tended to go off on his own when Montgomery and Diablo started to play.
