“Now stand still.” Ben barked at the young stallion as they practiced before going into the show ring. Nettle turned his head to give Ben a massive stink eye just as their number was being called. Ben gripped the lime green lead rope tightly as he led the rude Nordanner colt into the ring. They completed the pattern as well as Nettle would allow which wasn’t exactly perfect. Honestly, Ben wanted to throttle Nettle’s perlino hide until both their tempers were calmed by the beauty of the changing sky. Blue and brown eyes fixed themselves to the outside world, and both stood completely still for the judge as they were absorbed by the metamorphosis of color.

Nettle stayed focused on the sky until Ben tapped him on the muzzle. That was Ben’s way of saying “Hello, earth to Nettle”. It annoyed Nettle most of the time like a fly trying to bleed his thick hide. Dust kicked up as Nettle stamped his foot silently saying, “Yes, I’ll listen, but I’m still in charge”, and he along with his human counterpart exited the arena. He flicked his short, golden tail as little Rose ran up to him and offered him a treat for being “such a good boy”, or as Ben said, “such an a**”. The ginger never said that aloud near the 13 year old, but he would always mutter it under his breath after she left. Nettle continued to muse on the though until he saw her.

Her night black coat made her harder to see against the dusk sky, but Nettle never failed to notice her. He noticed everything the click of her shoes when her long legs overstepped each other to the curl at the end of her tail. He nickered to her, and she flicked her ear toward him. He trotted toward her ignoring Ben’s protests as he tried to keep up. He sniffed. It was ecstasy to him, she smelled like a mountain creek mixed with wild flowers. Ghost. How he loved her name.
