Description
All I've ever been able to see is eternal darkness, a cold that confines me within. I can see blood seeping through the walls. The liquid dries quickly and falls, the dried specks making a crimson powder. Staring at these walls makes me feel nauseated. The air chills me to the bone and makes my own blood turn to ice.Suddenly, I hear the clicking of heels. Curious, I turn my attention to the ill-lit hallway on the other side of my bars. The head scientist and her assistant seem to have come to check up on my neighbor. I haven't seen him in a few days, and have been assuming that he's dead. He had liked to talk about ideals. He had wanted freedom, but that's a dream that I know will never come true. We are lab rats.
"Did you run the tests?" Her sleek coat was waving as she paced in front of his cell.
"Ma'am, he seems to be a failure . . . and dead." he was staring into the drab cell. His eyes narrowed into the darkness as he examined my neighbor.
"What about Cassidy?" The doctor asked staring into my eyes. I turn my eyes towards the ground. I can feel her eyes cutting into me.
"Cassidy? We haven't finished analyzing the data. It's much too soon." The assistant looked like he was going to walk away, but she stopped him.
"Well, we have no time. There is the…alternative test."
"Ma'am! Protocol!"
"Screw the protocol."
"If he's positi-"
"Shut up!" The disgusting sound of flesh smacking flesh resounded through the stone walls.
"Sorry, but you complain too much." She walked past him and stared at me.
The look in her eyes promised pain. I backed up into the walls. Crimson flakes fell on my hair and down my back. My screams were like sirens: they were irritating and no one wanted to hear them.
"Now, Cassidy, do be careful. We are going to use a different method of testing."
"Leave me alone!" Even to myself my voice was pathetic. How was I ever going to deter her?
"Shush. My sponsor's patience is wearing thin. Which means I have no time."
"Don't come any closer!" The head sighed, and began digging for the key.
"Cassidy, it's useless. I need to see you." I stared at her and couldn't believe this.
"Claude."
"What? Did you say my first name?"
"You're hearing things. I never say first names." She was right. That voice wasn't female, but I swear I heard it. It was in this room.
The head stared at me and pulled out a knife. She pricked her finger with it and wiped the blood on her coat. The small spot of blood was blinding.
"What do you plan on doing? Stay away!"
"I do hope that this doesn't work. The experiment can fight back if provoked."
"Go away!" My screams couldn't escape these walls. No more than I could.
"Silence! For my own safety; you need to be tested. I have no time!" She yelled and
came at me.
I tried to get out of the way, but felt the knife scrape my arm. The blood oozed out of the scratch and the drops flowed. A hammer pounded in my head. A voice sounded in my head. I held it and knelled on the ground.
"Cassidy?" She approached me and I felt like I was pushed to safety.
"Cassidy? My lady, you are very wrong." A deep voice called out to her. It sounded as if it came from my mouth. From my body. I opened my mouth, but no words came. I felt like I was watching what was happening. Nothing more. I couldn't move!
"The experiment works? Fascinating!"
"I am no experiment." My eyes narrowed at the woman and she backed off.
" Experiment 414, it's your duty to follow my every order."
"My duty has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with my host." His suave voice called out and hugged himself.
Was he hugging himself? Was he hugging me? I can't understand any of this! What was happening? Nothing made sense!
"Your host? You're nothing, but a parasite! Two souls sharing one body isn't good!"
"Says the woman who made this possible." She bit her lip as she stared at the inhabitant of my body.
Her cold eyes stared at us with unusual hatred. The raw emotion made her clench the knife. Her hands loosened the hold and it fell. The dull clank resounded through the cell.
"Now, we are both defenseless. To a point."
"I made you! Don't defy me!" He started towards her with long, calculated steps. His eyes felt dangerous and the head's eyes were fearful.
What did these two know about each other? They both knew what he could do. Everyone did, except for me.
"Leave."
"In your report, call me Trine." He walked out of the cell and I cringed. Whatever happened, I was the victim. I had my freedom from the scientists, but I felt an even scarier captor swallowing me whole.
