Description
"They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the only thing in that bastard's eyes are death rays!"- A party of unprepared adventurers about to be slaughtered by the monstrous beholder.
A beholder is an otherworldly abomination that possesses unbridled hatred and malice, despising all other forms of life. Each beholder regards itself as the pinnacle of being, regarding all creatures unlike itself as vermin worthy only of destruction. Beholders even hate each other, warring with one another even over minor physical differences. Their skin texture varies, whether it's more like chitin or leathery skin. They posses 6-10 eyestalks that give the creature 360 degree vision, making ambush or stealth impossible.
A beholder's lair is typically a large, spacious cavern with high ceilings, where it can attack without fear of closing to melee range. The beholder often creates a system of tunnels around the region that allow the beholder access to its lair. These tunnels are easily navigated by the beholder, but your party of adventurers are not going easily go through the winding and complex tunnel system. When a beholder is lurking in a region, all creatures within 100 miles feel like they're being watched and when the beholder sleeps, minor warps in reality are caused(e.g: carving on the stone walls in a cave may distort or statues become covered in slime, ect).
When a creature sleeps within the 100 mile radius, they are subjected to one of the beholder's eye rays at random.
Sometimes, a beholder can unconsciously create monsters from their nightmares (i.e Death kiss and gazer), so if you see any beholder-like monsters, then it's obvious that a beholder is within the region.
A beholder's primary (and most iconic) form of attack are it's eye rays that are fired from the eye stalks. The rays have different effects, including a Charm ray, paralyzing ray, fear ray, slowing ray, enervation ray, telekinetic ray, sleep ray, petrification ray, disintegration ray and death ray. The beholder's central eye projects antimagic wherever it looks, nullifying any magic using opponent. You can tell who the beholder is going to target if they shift their gaze onto you. They can also bite their foes but beholders rarely get within melee range.
Beholders may look intimidating, but they won't look so scary when they're blinded in every eye, which also stops the antimagic projection and the eye rays, so never forget to pack your flashbang grenades or learn magic that blinds monsters. Ranged weapons that are accurate enough to take out the beholder's eye stalks are just as useful for blinding it, but takes more concentration, which won't be easy to get when the aberration is trying to disintegrate you. Melee isn't too helpful, since getting close to a beholder requires repetitive dodging from eye rays and a hard hitting weapon that won't slow you down.
