Hello, my name is Alice. Up until a few years ago, my life had been going fine. I remember the first time my horns started showing. I was so scared, that I tried hiding them under my hair. Oh, wait. I should probably explain first. 23 years ago, a certain mutation appeared in the human gene-pool, introducing people into the population that started growing horns after puberty. They aren’t much, just some exposed patches of bone above the ears, but that isn’t the bad thing. The women with this mutation are extremely aggressive, me included. To make things even worse, we have telepathic “arms” that can be moved so fast that they act just like blades. See any problems there? Yeah. My parents had always worried that I would be one of them, because I had always been a bit of a tomboy, getting into fights and such, but the clincher was my horns growing in. When I first noticed them was when I was showering, and I felt little bumps on my head that weren’t there before. My heart stopped, or so it felt like. My life seemed forfeit. What would the other people at school think? What would they say? What would they do? Looking back, it should have been obvious. People with the mutation were always first ostracized, and then they were often lynched. Just like the old days of the Jim Crowe Laws. At first, it was really easy to hide them. In fact, my hair did the work for me, until they started poking above it like little white traitors. I started wearing hats, “because they’re classy,” I said. Yeah, that didn’t last. I’d always hated hats, and people started to wonder what was wrong with me. Then, I tried to file them down, not realizing that they had a whole network of nerves in them. Needless to say, that didn’t work. My parents were hysterical, trying to keep a semblance of normality, while living with the fear of having their daughter taken away from them. They did the best they could, but even that wasn’t enough. It was only a matter of time before I was found out. I remember it like it happened only a few seconds ago. A little child was the one who did it, just a casual point and giggle was all it took for her mother to see my just barely protruding horns. That’s when it all went crashing down.
