“Well, we got found out. Apparently, someone from my research firm suspected that I had run off because of my daughter. Now that I look back, I can see how obvious it must have been to them. I don’t hate them for that. How could they not figure it out? I’d do the same in their position. They thought they were doing me a favor.”
“Wow. What happened to your daughter?”
“She killed herself. When they found us, they offered me a choice. Either give her up, or have it all exposed to the public. They gave me a day to decide. My daughter couldn’t stand the thought of running for her life forever. So, she did herself in. She was perfect. She never killed anyone! She was eighteen when she died. For a person with the mutation, that was totally unprecedented. Still is, as far as I know. I mean, I don’t usually tend to show my face in public anymore.” I didn’t know what to say to that. How could any of us not kill someone, even just by accident? Wasn’t that just a part of what the mutation did?
“How did she not kill anyone? Isn’t that a part of our nature?”
“Ah. I see you have come to believe the lies too! No, it’s not a part of your nature. In their studies, my firm found out that if a child with the mutation grows up without hearing that they are supposed to be mindless killers, all the extra energy that could have been used to kill was instead used to love and protect. In other words, families with a mutated child would be way safer than other families. The arms, instead of being used to destroy, typically ended up being used in a more protective way. You can block bullets with your teles, right?”
“What? What are teles?”
“Oh! Sorry. That’s just a name that the people in my research firm came up with. It’s just a shorter way of saying telekinetic arm.”
“Well, that makes sense. Yeah, I can.”
“That’s the real potential of these arms. Did you know that in war-torn countries, people with the mutation are actually used in military applications? They aren’t used for soldiers, but rather shields, because people like you with the mutation have a great capacity for making relationships, and so will protect those they love even with their lives...”
