Description
GIDDYUPAnother scene from my short film.
Last teaser, I swear xD; I'll post the film up soon, I promise
This scene was especially difficult to colour because she was straddling the fish but I needed the fish to be line-less while she had lines. Plus his tail goes in front of her while her legs goes in front of his body.
animated from scratch, at 12 frames a second.
Tools: Flipbook, Photoshop and Aftereffects for camera-move.

My other stuff:
edit:
Some people have been asking me how I'm animating, so here's the response I posted on Tumblr:
I first time out my animation in Digicel Flipbook, exported it as PNG sequence when I finally feel like I have it well timed-out. Then I load it into photoshop for clean-up and colour. Because photoshop’s timing isn’t very good, I then go to Adobe Aftereffects to put the animation together with the backgrounds I have already finished and also tinker with any possible post-production stuff I want to do, such as camera moves or muti-layered pans and any filters I want to put over, like glows and dust-effects, etc.
And that’s how I did my film

Whoaaaaaa. That looks so cool. When I grow up, I want to just be able to draw/ do art in general, like you. This looks amazing. +1 watch.

Ok wow, I've been watching your WIP uploads as they come, and they just get more and more beautiful. Not only is the concept charming, the color is wonderful. I'm so excited to see where this goes.
This actually makes me wonder, what are your steps for moving this from flipbook and getting this cleaned up in photoshop? I'm still in early years of the animation major, but within a year or so, I'll be having to make a short film as well. Most people do 3D or colorless 2D, but I've been trying to find the best way to make a colored 2D film.

thanks lots <3~
I simply export the png sequence into a folder and then put them all into photoshop; turn the photoshop animation window on, and group each png into a folder so I can flip them while cleaning up. ...it's a little hard to explain without actually showing it on photoshop though, so I hope you can understand what I'm talking about? xD;;. but yah, i have each frame in their own folder, that way I can add a layer for the lineart, put colour on a layer below it, and do it for all the frames without getting lost, because with the way I coloured it, I ended up having around 100 layers per scene, more, if the scene is longer.
good luck!

so you export the sequence as individual png images then, that makes so much sense but I've never had to use flipbook for that.
I think I have a general idea, I'm familiar with photoshop animation so I get it.
This explains a lot when you said it takes a lot of time hahaha. But the result is fabulous~

Just a thought, I don't know if it was intentional or not; in the last few frames, just when the fish has finished turning, one of the clouds seems to overlap its tail for a moment. I don't know if you intended this a a semi transparency effect for the tail or if it is a mistake in the layering of the animation but I thought I'd point it out just in case.

thanks but yah, it was intentional; I was panning the clouds towards the camera as she was going down for a better depth.

.... this is crazy amazing!
How long did this take you? And how did you colour it so the fish looks so soft and glowy??
Sorry for the questions but I'm working on a drawn animation at the moment too and I can't imagine using anything but paint bucket XD

oops, meant to reply more than that and accidentally clicked something D:
lol, but yah, thanks This took me about...a few weeks from rough to finish? xD; I'm not sure, because I did my rough animation all at once, then moved onto cleaning everything (the whole short film) all at once, and then colouring, and so long, so i'm not sure how long each individual scene took when all these things compile together.
I put a glow on the fish. Basically, what I did was I put clean lines on the fish, magic-lasso the inside to paint-bucket on a seperate layer for the colour, then duplicated that layer underneath and filtered it on blur. Then I filled that layer (the blurred layer) with red because the glow was red, and then duplicated THAT layer so it's more opaque (because the blur tool kind of makes it too light for what I had in mind). And then I changed the lineart to the same colour as the fish itself (because i cleaned up in black). After that, I shaded the fish and I hand-drew a certain texture for my fish, so I put that on too to make the effect better.
Once all of that is done, I finally put everything into Adobe AfterEffects CS5, and put the layers and camera moves together. Once I was satisfied with the way the camer zoomed in and the clouds moved, I put a final filter on it which I did by duplicating the whole scene, layed it on top of the other, turned the top layer's opacity to 20%, and guassian blurred it for a hazy-effect.
hahaha, it's a little tedious, but I had some people help me with the paint-bucketing process, so that helped a lot.
....and I just realized how long I've written. Sorry D;
