Description
The TCDD 45151 Class is an export version of the LMS 8F that was given to the Turkish Republic Railways during WW2. The TCDD 45151 Class differs from it's regular 8F counterpart, as it has a Westinghouse Air Brake on the left side of it's smokebox, as well as a Cowcatcher attached to it's front buffer beam; they were also fitted with lights for running in the dark.
The TCDD 45151s ran alongside DRG Class 52s that N. Germany gave them as Turkey was a Nutural Country during wartime. The TCDD 45151s lasted in revenue service up until the 1980s to which they were slowly withdrawn from service.
Happily, six of them have been preserved; No. 45170 currently resides at the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway in a tattered state, missing it's outside cylinders among other things; it is awaiting restoration still; the locomotive has been named 'Sir William McAlpine'. No. 45168 currently resides at the Glos. Walks. Railway and is in a operational state. Nos. 45166 & 45170 have also been preserved by the Churchill 8F Preservation Socitity, the same people who rescued No. 45168; Nos. 45166 & 45170 movement to preservation have been filmed on the Docu. TV Series Monster Moves.
The nickname the Turks gave the TCDD 45151 8Fs were Churchills, after Wartime Prime Minister, Winston Churchill.
