Description
She first laid eyes on him in Faron Woods, traipsing about in search of the forest’s temple. She hadn’t seen anything like him before: his hair was golden like daffodils and intense eyes bluer than the sky. He wore a tunic as green as the leaves on the trees with a floppy pointed cap to match. Out of curiosity for the boy, she flew closer for further inspection. The closer she flew, the stronger the feeling she had that she could trust this creature, and when he turned to face her she realized just exactly who and what the boy was. He was the Legendary Hero and the bearer of the Triforce of Courage, proven by the Master Sword he held in his hand.
The boy looked surprised at first to see a fairy, then broke out into a bright grin and held out his free hand in welcome. The fairy flew up to his face, looking deep into the Hero’s eyes before perching on his shoulder. She knew by the boy’s demeanor and the sword in his hand that he could absolutely be trusted, and decided she wanted to know where he was going. The teen chuckled at the fairy sitting on his shoulder before continuing on his journey.
She remained on the Hero’s shoulder as they travelled through the woods and the temple deep within, flitting about occasionally to inspect markings on the walls or vines that hung from the ceiling. While in the large room near the end of the temple, the fairy found herself and the Hero trapped inside as a large, monstrous spider descended from the ceiling. The creature spat multiple wads of venomous webbing at the pair, and while the Hero was quick to dodge, the fairy was not so lucky.
The poisoned silk struck the fairy and pinned her to the wall, effectively immobilizing her and making her incapable of using magic to free herself. The Hero tried to help his new companion but the monster blocked him off and he was forced to fight it. Once the spider was dead, the boy ran to where the fairy still lay trapped and gently pulled the webbing off of her.
The Hero noticed with concern that her glow was now significantly lackluster and tried to convince her to stay in the forest so she wouldn’t get injured travelling with him again, but fairies are stubborn creatures and the tiny, winged girl continued to follow him. When it was clear the fairy wasn’t going to leave him, the boy pulled an empty bottle from his pouch. His dropped grass, leaves and different flowers inside, then offered it to the fairy. She regarded it for a moment before understanding the Hero’s intent and climbed inside. Smiling, the Hero strapped the bottle to his belt and they were on their way.
The bottle was a good idea, the fairy decided some time later after she fully recovered from the spider incident. It allowed her to be immersed in the adventures she and Link (as she learned the Hero was called) went on while still remaining safe from the various monsters he had to battle on his quest. Despite all the danger they faced, Link was rarely in any real trouble as he proved to be quite skilled in wielding the Master Sword. The only time the fairy truly feared for the Hero’s life was during the final battle with Ganondorf, the evil bearer of the Triforce of Power.
She, Link, and Princess Zelda, holder of the Triforce of Wisdom, all knew that the outcome of this battle would determine the fate of all of Hyrule. Link fought hard with as much courage and skill as one would expect from the one who possessed part of the Triforce, but late into the battle, when exhaustion kicked in and Link finally ran out of health potions, the Hero was struck down, seemingly for good.
The fairy watched in horror as her friend collapsed and Zelda cried from within the barrier Ganondorf had placed her in. Just when it seemed all hope was lost and Ganondorf victorious, the fairy felt an inexplicable sense of purpose, similar to when she’d first known she could trust the Hero. Thinking back to when Link saved her from the giant spider so long ago, she knew she had to save him like he’d done for her.
She broke free from her bottle and flew about Link’s body, showering him in as much magic as her tiny form could muster. She panted in relief when she saw the Hero begin to stir and his wounds heal. Gasping for air but with a familiar fire in those blue eyes, Link raised himself from the ground and charged Ganondorf, knocking the villain down for the final time. Once she was positive Link was safe, the fairy flew down to rest on his shoulder, tired herself from using so much magic to heal him. He looked over at his winged companion and grinned at her, thankful for all her help.
With Ganondorf defeated, Zelda was free from the prison he set her in and she rushed forward to thank the Hero. Link was knighted Champion of Hyrule and given vast riches and land in gratitude for all he’d done for the kingdom. After some time spent in Castle Town celebrating, he and the fairy headed home. When the two reached Faron Woods again, Link was reluctant but ready to part ways with his close friend.
He really shouldn’t have been so surprised, the fairy thought, that when he tried to set her down in a patch of flowers, she just rolled her eyes and flew back up to sit on his shoulder, ready for the next set of adventures.
