Magpie is a full-blood hippy. Being the (accidental) child of Treehugger and Spearhead, he grew up surrounded by bizarre wisdom, philosophy, and art. He had a strange childhood, mainly because Treehugger and Spearhead had no idea how to be parents- especially when they were no longer romantically involved. They stayed friends and shared responsibility for little Maggie, but they weren't always the best at caring for him. Magpie loves his parents, but he does now understand how unstable his life was when he was young.

Magpie is typically stoic and deadpan, and doesn't usually raise his voice or get angry with other ponies. His friends joke that he's in a constant state of meditation-- which might not actually be that far off. He was much more like this when he was younger, though, and has since branched out a bit in the personality department. While his special talent is art therapy, he loves acting and playing characters; it gives him an opportunity to express his emotions in a way that he normally wouldn't be comfortable with. Most ponies are surprised by how talented he is at acting.

Magpie is very adaptable and responds well to change, so when his mother started dating Pinkie Pie, he was quick to accept her into his family. He adores the bubbly mare, and can't help smiling any time he's around her. Pinkie loves helping him style his hair, baking with him, taking him on walks through meadows-- pretty much anything that involves her spending time with him. When Treehugger and Pinkie got married, Magpie was very pleased to be chosen as the ring bearer.

At first, Magpie was unsure about his little sister. He liked the idea of having a sibling around to play with, but he was worried that it meant he wouldn't get to spend time with his moms anymore. When Piper was born, however, he couldn't help loving her. He helped take care of her any way he could by feeding her, rocking her, or bathing her, and was the best older brother that any parents could ask for. Plus, spending more time with the baby meant spending more time with his moms. Now, Piper and Magpie are still close, and trust each other more than they trust anyone else. Magpie was the one who gave Piper the idea to start her camp, and he sometimes visits her there to help out. Piper gets a lot of her mannerisms from her big brother.

Magpie isn't quite as close to Pompom and Cherry Blossom, as the age difference between them is pretty large. They both love their older brother, but Magpie was occupied with a lot of clubs and extracurricular activities when they were young, so they didn't hang out much.

Magpie and Lionheart are best friends, and they bond over contemplating life, having long conversations about death, and overthinking things. They give each other space to be philosophical and a bit disturbing.

Magpie met Nova Spiral when he joined the theatre company that Nova was a manager for. The two became friends, and kept hanging out after the show was over. After a while, Magpie started to realize that Nova had feelings for him, but didn't say anything about it for a while, mainly because he was still trying to sort out his own feelings. He eventually realized that he returned Nova's feelings, but still said nothing, instead waiting for Nova to confess when he was comfortable. But, of course, he never did, so Magpie had to take matters into his own hooves and woo the pants off his nerd boy via singing some cheesy love song from a musical.

Magpie is good friends and pen pals with Hemlock Fable, who he met when one of Ponyville's plays went on tour. Hemlock first approached Maggie because she thought his special talent was similar to hers, given his cutie mark and the fact that he was purchasing potion components when she saw him. Turns out, he's actually an artist and a therapist, and was buying the potion materials to make healing tea. They got along well, though, and Hemlock ended up coming to one of his shows later that week, where they chatted again, and Hemlock realized Maggie was her cousin's boyfriend.

Magpie's past relationships include Spring Hues, Buttercup, and Felix, and he ends up with Nova.
