Description
Haha, yes. It's not that I think anybody would like to do this, I just felt like doing another tutorialAnyway, these canes aren't that easy, but most of it is just a question of patience. Could be worse. But they do make nice presents. Sort of.
I'm sorry for any language-related mistakes and also for confusing explanations, I'm just not good at explaining in English. And some might also be a little short, but I didn't want this tutorial to become too long, because it's quite long already.
Oh, and perhaps the background is a little annoying in places
Yes...that's it, hope you like it!

Wooooaaaaah..... you really know your stuff! Can I ask... what do people use canes for? Is it just for putting on your nails?

Sorry for the late reply!
I suppose some people also use them for decorative purposes or for making jewellery.
Fruit canes are also often used for food miniatures like cakes and...whatever

hey i have a question, isn't it illegal to make something out of something famous like say.. pokemon, mcdonalds, Starbucks and sell it? or even wear it?
π: 0 β©: 1
QueEnOfNights In reply to clovercarmen5 [2012-07-30 11:58:40 +0000 UTC]
I don't know much about these things, but I'm pretty sure you could get into some sort of trouble if you were to sell it.
Yet I've never heard of anyone getting into trouble for wearing something like that. Obviously you could call it copyright infringement, but then that's once again the question of whether fan art in general is illegal or not. Of course in the strictest sense it is, but in most cases it's tolerated as long as it's non-commercial.

Hi, just butting in
Legally you can make whatever you like and make it look like whatever you want as long as it is for 'personal use' (This includes gifts). Copyright infringement only applies if you sell the work or profit by it in some way. Most countries have a standard of 20% difference for copyright, which means that if there is a recognisable difference between the 'original' and the 'copy' then it's classed as a new design. I'm not sure what the original looks like but with something like this I think all you'd have to do is change the name and it would be all yours
HOWEVER having designed and made the cane and posted this tutorial, ~QueEnOfNights now owns the copyright to this particular cane design
butting out now

VanillaSnowflake [2012-06-11 01:26:07 +0000 UTC]
do you have to do the transparent part all around?
and does this work with polymer clay?
π: 0 β©: 1
QueEnOfNights In reply to VanillaSnowflake [2012-07-30 12:07:30 +0000 UTC]
Sorry for the late reply!
It works perfectly with polymer clay, actually that's what I've used for this as well
And I don't suppose you have to do the transparent part. But of course it's harder to make the whole thing smaller if it's not round, that's why I've added that.

I have a quastion because I see people, for example on youtube that slice canes perfectly round. but mine always come out oval or something not round
It's like my clay is too soft or something. because if you buy canes they are very hard and more easy to slice.
Is that also when you slice them or is my clay just too soft?
π: 0 β©: 1
QueEnOfNights In reply to mixzz [2012-07-30 12:18:53 +0000 UTC]
Sorry for the late reply! T_T
If you have problems slicing the canes, I recommend cutting them after baking. Of course you need a really sharp cutting tool like a razor blade and they need to be quite thin for it to work, but that way it's much easier to slice them.
Most canes you buy are already baked as well, just not for very long so they're not usually that hard.
