Description The khataka has a tale for you,
That is, if you wish to hear it.
Actually, there isn't much to tell,
You'll only have to see it.

Should I relay my kawali to you?
The one no soul has seen-
My ghungroo grow impatient
Listen to the tatkar of my dream…

Dhin.
Dhriga dhin…

No, wait- I should count the beats first.
Tabla, sitar- in sync?
Let's check the chorus
Taa thei thei tata
Ah thei thei tat-

Ready? Back-on-sum-
And-
Aik. Aikdou- aik dou teen,
Aikdou, aik dou teen,
Aikdou, aik dou teen-
Step. Step step step
Chun. Chin-chin-chin

Painting the stage with tentative stride.
My bells tremble like leaves as I move-
Hesitant stumble, a precarious glide
For an audience that will never approve.

The dance I will never perform
The stage that won’t ring
With the sound of my footsteps
And my bells as they sing.

Even in my dream…
Aik. Aikdou-
aik dou teen…

Who is listening to this khataka?
With her thousand tales to tell,
Though all I need is your eyes on me
And your ears to listen well.

Aik. Aikdou- aik dou teen
Aikdou. Aik dou-

Shadows falling on the curtained wall
Listen closely, empty hall
I greet the silence, take my bow
Invisible eyes, watch me now.

As the mudrah breaks,
My lotus hands unfold
The first prop in my dream.
Its petals for you to behold.

One.
By one.
By one.
Blooming- exposed to the world
The flower has come
done.
Undone.
Undone.

As my flower opens
It is torn at the seam
My story unfolds before you
Feel the rhythm of my dream.

Aik.
Aikdou-
Aik
Ting
Dou
Ting
Teen.
Ting

The bells entrance my fantasy audience,
And slowly, I too am drawn in
Everything freezes- a blackened blur
Cue the rapid chakkar spins

Tha thei thei tat
Thei thei tata ah
Spin, spin into the world of Sufis;
Rumi, Akbar…and Bulla Shah.

Thei thei thei tat
Th –ei Th –ei
Thei thei tat tat
Th –ei Th –ei thei thei thei tata ah thei thei tata

Stop.
Freeze.
Look up.
Pause abruptly
Are you still watching?
Still watching
Still watching me?

My breath escapes in short rapid wisps
Look left- look right, hold for four,
Until the music starts to tease
Tabla, sitar- yearning for more.

The sitar swoons over my moves
The tablah echoes my aching feet
Steady, steady- wait for sum…
And now, back into the coaxing beat.

The hollow darkness consumes me
While my rebellious bells sing
None but the demons can hear them
Weary of their constant

Ching ching ching

At least the demons hear my story.
But my bells keep them at bay
They won’t approach this calming fury
And they will stay out of my way.

I stamp down, my feet slap the floor
Resonance- strength, a warrior's might
While my back folds into flawless curves
Graceful- elegant, a swan in flight.

The demons lurk in corners unseen
Tainting and tormenting this beautiful dream
Though I am blinded and cannot see
I have no fear- my bells protect me.

And if one nears,
Drawing close with a deathly snare
I spin rapidly and face it
With Shankar's ferocious glare

Placing Vishnu's flute by my side,
My arms chose his bow
I wear it with an instant pride
Fingers forming the invisible arrow

A steady arm rises- stretching the unseen gold string
Eyes following the imaginary arrow
Bells warning-
Ching. Ching ching ching

Aikdou. Aik dou teen.
Aikdou-

The bhol pauses
The demon is gone
Now who is left
To hear my song?

Divine strength vanished,
My hands form a meek lotus once more
The petals retreat into themselves
Back to my dream's furtive core.

Now my world is sealed from you
And I shy away from the stage
The bird is not free to tell
This story remains in its cage.

An artist is a selfish being
We dance, paint, feel for ourselves.
Keep our stories hidden
Left dusting on the shelves.

My eyes sweep the audience
That was thankfully never there
I take my leave silently
Hording the stories I will never share

But, even if I don't dance for you
Be assured, I will dance for myself
With the swan's mesmerising presence
And the warrior's resonant stealth.

WOW!!! This was GOOD and i mean it!! of course you don't have to dance only for yourself. share with me!! i'm a brethren artist, so it's alright, you don't need to be sefish with me!! XD Honestly though, you know: this SO reminds be of Poe's The Bells. honestly. your poem's got the rythm and it makes me imagine the dance really vividly. i don't think i'll ever let you read any of my poems again, it'll reduce my self-confidence to cold ashes.
Wow. this is seriously good stuff. i really can't say it enough times. I think you should get every single poem you might have and then try and get them published as a compiltion or soemthing. i'd buy it!!
Well. i'm off to read your other poem. be prapred to hear from me either in a few minutes or tomorrow. take care sweeters,
Lurve
